Mother Seeks Permission To Sell Kidney To Put Her Daughter Through Medical School Because The Scholarship Money Was Not Released

That parents would go to the ends of the Earth to protect their kids and safeguard their interests is not a secret. But that in order to secure their future, they would sacrifice their own selves, is something we’re still wrapping our head around. Especially after we heard about a mother, filing for permission to sell her kidney, to be able to pay for her daughter’s medical school expenses.

A news piece that has taken us aback not because of the circumstances of this mother and daughter duo which are definitely hard but the extent to which a mother is willing to go for her daughter. It reminds us of our privilege, because here’s a mother ready to sell an organ to ensure her daughter gets to complete her education, we simply cannot complain about our work from home lives.

This story is about the mother of an MBBS student, Aggipetla Rubiya Khanam who is studying under the Videshi Vidya Deevena Scheme, in Phillippines. Her mother recently requested for permission from the Anantapur Collector to sell away her kidney to pay for the fee and expenses of her daughter. This after her daughter was promised a state sanctioned scholarship, but didn’t receive one.

One of 15 students receiving this scholarship, Aggipetla’s story is similar to many with her who depended on the State government’s scholarship money sanctioned to them to sail them through. However, after the funds weren’t transferred, they were all thrown out of the hostel for not paying the fee. Magbul Jan, the mother, said her daughter Ms. Rubiya Khanam had gotten admitted to Davao Medical School Foundation INC at Davavo University in the Philippines and received the E-Pass for the scholarship also, but the amount was not being released despite the sanction for the past one year.

She said, “The total cost of the MBBS education at the university was supposed to be ₹30 lakh for the entire study period and out of that we were promised ₹10 lakh scholarship before the pandemic broke out, and the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy government had enhanced the amount to ₹15 lakh later. However, about 560 such students were still waiting for the release of the money.”

Rubiya’s mother further went on to share her despair of the lockdown breaking their backs, as she said, “We wanted to raise funds by mortgaging our house, but couldn’t do even that as it is an old house with no municipal permissions built before my marriage.” She then went on to say, “I am in a desperate situation as I cannot see my daughter suffer in inhuman conditions, living in a single room along with 14 others with just one bathroom to share.”

The situation of these people, willing to go to such lengths just make their children study is heartbreaking. As of now, there has been no response from the Collector, but there is hope that the promises that were made to these children and their mothers will be fulfilled and these girls will seen through these tough times.
