Lata Mangeshkar Could Have Been Nicer To Ranu Mondal. She’s A Legend And Ranu Is Just Starting Out

She is Lata Mangeshkar. A legend with a voice that has mesmerised several generations. When her voice comes on, it’s almost like the whole world suspends for a while. So it’s only natural that she serves as an inspiration for many, many people across the world. And when we recently discovered Ranu Mondal, the woman who has a mellifluous voice, it was like a ray of sunshine to brighten up a bleak day.  This was a woman who was singing at a railway station and got invited by Himesh Reshammiya to sing for him.

From a woman who would sing Lata Mangeshkar songs at a train station in Bengal, to an over-night internet sensation, the story of Ranu Mondal has been that of a fairytale. Ranu Mondal’s life changed after a video of her singing, Ek pyaar ka nagma went viral and now Lata Mangeshkar has responded to Ranu being compared to her.

Lata Mangeshkar shared how she finds herself fortunate if she was able to help someone out with her work and her name, as she said, “Agar mere naam aur kaam se kissiko bhala hota hai toh main apne-aap ko khush-kismat samajhti hoon.

Continuing further, Lata ji said, “But I also feel imitation is not a reliable and durable companion for success. By singing my songs or Kishoreda’s (Kumar), or (Mohd) Rafi Saab’s, or Mukesh Bhaiyya or Asha’s (Bhosle) numbers, aspiring singers can get short-term attention. But it won’t last,” and that seems, well, rather unfortunate. Ranu comes from a humble background and probably never imagined even garnering the kind of publicity that she has. This is all probably very overwhelming for her. Surely, a legend of Lata Mangeshkar’s stature could have been nicer to her?

She then said, “So many children sing my songs so beautifully. But how many of them are remembered after the first flush of success? I only know of Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghosal.”

Her advice to Ranu and many aspiring like her was to, “Be original. By all means sing the evergreen songs by me and my colleagues. But after a point the singer must seek and find his or her own song. If Asha (Bhosle) had not insisted on singing in her own style she would have remained in my shadow forever. She is the biggest example of how far individuality can take one’s talent to.” And while it may be great advice and surely sound advice because you cannot piggy back on someone’s name, we certainly think Lataji could have been more encouraging with Ranu.
