Female Advocate Brutally Assaulted In Full Public View Over Property Dispute. Why Did No One Stop This?
In a patriarchal society like ours, it’s nothing new to see a man assaulting a woman and showing off his ‘mardangi’ by ill-treating her. But what if the woman in question is someone who knows her rights? Well, that’s exactly what happened in this case. A video of a man abusing and assaulting a female advocate in Bagalkot, Karnataka has gone viral on social media. The man can be seen attacking the woman and slapping and kicking her ruthlessly. The woman can be seen yelling and falling as she is attacked by the man in the video.

According to media reports, the man in the video is, Mahantesh Cholachagudda, a photographer at Bagalkot’s University of Horticulture Sciences in Navanagar and a neighbour of advocate Sangeeta Shikkeri. Shockingly this incident occurred in a public place and even though the advocate’s husband begged people for assistance, not one person came forward to stop this man from assaulting the female advocate. Soon after the video went viral leading to a social media outrage, Karnataka Police jumped into action and arrested the accused on the charges of assaulting a woman. On the other hand, the advocate has been admitted to a hospital following the brutal attack. According to News18, Superintendent of Police Lokesh Jagalasar revealed that the accused has been arrested and been presented before the court as well and the probe is being conducted in the case.

Advocate Sangeeta has claimed that the attack was motivated by a complaint that she made against the Bagalkot BJP General Secretary Raju Naikar who has allegedly been harassing her over a property dispute. However, Mahantesh has claimed that he was not provoked by anyone to assault the advocate and the political leader has also categorically denied the allegations made against him and called the entire incident a ‘political plot’ against him.

Mahantesh and Sangeeta are neighbours and the advocate’s residence was purchased by Raju Naikar but the advocate claims that her uncle cold the property without informing her family and the case is currently in court. Just a few days ago the advocate had held a press conference and claimed that the buyer of the property, the BJP leader has been harassing her and her family to vacate the house. But now, Raju Naikar has claimed that he bought the house legally and did not misuse his power or provoke anyone to assault the woman. Media reports further suggest that the advocates in Bagalkot has collectively decided to not appear for the accused and had planned a dharna for Monday, that is today.

Well, everything being said and done, it’s shocking that a woman, an advocate at that has been assaulted in full public view and not one person had the decency to come forward and stop the accused. In the video, people can be seen standing around them and watching the brutal assault take place and clearly some even recorded it instead of doing anything about it. Where has our humanity gone?
