Indian Social Activist Anjali Bhardwaj Among 12 Anti-Corruption Champions Awarded By Joe Biden Administration
People have this ridiculous notion that women aren’t suited for leadership roles or work that gets their hands (or hair) dirty. The truth is though, that in every profession, women are smashing ceilings and reaching for the stars. These women must be appreciated. They’re taking on the world, defying social norms and actually making a difference. Just like the woman we, along with USA President Joe Biden’s administration, are celebrating today: Anjali Bhardwaj. She is a social worker and a champion of anti-corruption campaigns. Lord knows we need more women like her.
Anjali Bhardwaj is a social worker working on issues of transparency and accountability. She is one of the 12 anti-corruption champions announced by Joe Biden’s administration. On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Tony Blinken announced that the new administration has decided to award 12 individuals from around the world who have worked tirelessly against corruption in their countries. This is such an honour!
Explaining the decision, US Secretary of State Tony Blinken said, “The Biden administration recognises that we will only be successful in combating these issues by working in concert with committed partners, including courageous individuals who champion anti-corruption efforts and countries working to fulfil their commitments to international anti-corruption standards. For that reason, I am announcing a new International Anti-Corruption Champions Award, recognising individuals who have worked tirelessly, often in the face of adversity, to defend transparency, combat corruption, and ensure accountability in their own countries.”

Further adding, “They inspire us and so many of their counterparts pursuing these ideals around the world. The United States enforces one of the most robust anti-corruption frameworks in the world.”
This is a real honour. Anjali Bhardwaj has tirelessly worked to decrease corruption and improve transparency. According to the State Department, she has served as an active member of the Right to Information Movement in India for over two decades. The social worker is also the founder of the Satark Nagrik Sangathan (SNS). This is a citizen’s group with the aim to promote transparency and accountability in government and encourage the active participation of other citizens.
Her achievements don’t end here. Anjali is also a convener of the National Campaign for Peoples’ Right to Information. They successfully advocated for the creation of an anti-corruption ombudsman and the Whistle Blowers’ Protection Act to protect the people who expose and report corruption and abuse of power. Anjali Bharadwaj’s efforts are incredible and we are glad she is being recognized on a global scale.
