Study Conducted By IIM-A Shows Women Executives Earn Rs 85 For Every Rs 100 Earned By Men In India. Equal Pay Is A Joke!

We all are aware of the gender wage gap that shows that there’s a huge difference in earnings between men and women. In every country in the world, women are being paid less than men even if they are working much more than them (make it make sense). Recently, a study showed that women executives in India are still earning an average of Rs 85 for every Rs 100 earned by their male counterparts. It’s high time that we should opt for equal pay, right?

The study was conducted by the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) faculty and it showed that there is a huge pay gap between men and women in India. The report which is titled ‘The Glass Ceiling- Leadership Gender Balance in NSE 200 Companies’ did this not-so-shocking revelation and highlighted that equal pay in India is still a big joke that failed to make us laugh for apparent reasons. According to the reports, an average compensation paid to women executives stood at Rs 1.91 crore while their male counterparts earned a total of Rs 2.24 crore. The study added that the representation of women in the top and senior management of companies in India is relatively lower with only 7 per cent. Meanwhile, the percentage of women on the board of directors is merely 5 per cent. As per the reports, the number of women directors at the top level in NSE 500 companies has jumped to 16 per cent in 2022 from 4.5 per cent in 2014.

The study was conducted under the aegis of the Arun Duggal ESG Centre for Research and Innovation at IIM-A by Promila Agarwal who is an associate professor in human resource management. The report was supported by ICRA Chairperson Arun Duggal. The report is reportedly based on replies from 109 out of 200 NSE companies, with a sample size of more than 4,000 senior executives of 2021.

Arun Duggal said that gender balance improvement can be achieved by differentiated and measurable steps at the workplace. The report also quotes Indra Nooyi, the former CEO of PepsiCo noted that it is important that companies should reconsider their approach towards women leaders and should take an ‘all talent on equal pay’ approach. She further suggested that this can be achieved by taking measures to put in place a critical mass of women leaders who can inspire other women as well. She also said that men in power need to get educated to not discriminate against women.
