Hildur Guðnadóttir, The Composer Of Joker’s Score, Is The First Woman In 23 Years To Win An Oscar In This Category. We Love Everything About This

Let’s admit it. It’s a boys’ club with all the awards and their elaborate ceremonies. But that’s changing with women taking back control. Because every time a woman goes on stage and makes an impassioned speech about women, we are putting our voices out, shaking some misogyny out of the room. However, despite several steps forward, some things don’t change.

One of the things is that most fields in the movie industry continue to be dominated by testosterone, women barely making an appearance even in the nomination list. In fact, even this year, Hildur Guðnadóttir is the only female in her category. But to us, that’s why her win is that much more sweet.

But what really stood out for us was her lovely speech after her win, encouraging women everywhere to let their voices be heard. “To the girls, to the women, to the mothers, to the daughters, who hear the music bubbling within, please speak up. We need to hear your voices,”she said and we fell in love with her.

If you’re are wondering why it’s such a big deal, it’s because for the past 20 years, no woman has won this award. In fact, for the past 3 years, no women were even nominated. So when we say the statistics are skewed, we really see that.

For her work, Hildur got a standing ovation. About this, she said, “It’s a wild moment. I heard my name, and I was thinking, ‘I can do this, I can do this.’ It floored me.”

Hildur revealed her process behind creating the score for Joker. She said she got into the head and mind space of the character, reading the script helped her understand exactly what he was going through. “I tried to imagine what was going on in his head,” she said.

And while it’s all rainbows and unicorns right now, it didn’t exactly go down that way, Hildur said. “It has kind of poked a lot of people,” she said. And we are sure it did. A woman is a category where men have previously ruled is sure to ruffle a few feathers. And a relative newbie at that. In her category this year were industry stalwarts, notably, John Williams who has received his 52nd Oscar nomination this year, which is a record of sorts in itself. Only the late Walt Disney had more than this, his number was a jaw-dropping 59 Oscar nominations.

Hildur is born in Iceland and currently lives in Berlin. When asked if she would move to Los Angeles after her big win, she said, ““It’s not really my climate. It’s a little too sunny. It wouldn’t really suit my music to live here,” Variety reported her saying.

But we guess what really was a high for the composer is when Joaquin did his famous dance on the stairs. “It was so incredible to see that Joaquin had channeled exactly what I felt when I wrote it.”
