Karnataka Government College Denies Hijab Wearing Female Students Entry. What Is Happening In Our Country?

A lot of things in this world get my blood boiling. Afterall, I am a short-tempered woman and with the way things are going right now, can you blame me? What brought upon my wrath today was this news of Karnataka government’s PU college denying girls wearing hijabs entry into the college just 2 months prior to their exams. The video has gone viral and the reactions from the people are valid.

On Thursday, female students in government PU college in Kundapura, Karnataka have been denied entry into the college for wearing hijabs. This has been the third day since this issue surfaced within the institution. This was caused because a bunch of male students wore saffron shawls to protest female students wearing hijabs to college. The entitlement here is astounding!

The girls came to the college with their parents and were trying to push the gate open despite the strict order that wearing hijabs will not be allowed in accordance with the dress code which is issued by the state government. The parent’s of the hijab-clad girls also protested outside the gate. When they entered the college they were surrounded by boys wearing saffron shawls to protest. The boys were soon asked to remove their shawls and attend their classes.

In lieu of the conflict, the Kundapur police sent the hijab wearing students’ parents away, giving them government instructions. However, the girls continued to protest near the gate. A group of students from the girls’ PU government college at Udupi where the hijab row started first last month have approached the additional deputy commissioner to sort the problem so as to create a suitable and education-friendly environment in the college. In this appeal, the hijab-clad girls said that the education in the college is being interrupted due to the constant presence of the police and media.

This whole conflict began when 6 students came to the classroom wearing hijabs, violating the dress code as hijab was allowed inside the campus but not classrooms (make this make sense). The protesting students were not allowed inside the classrooms for a month. They continued their protest by sitting outside the classroom for a month, according to sources

It is such a shame that no matter what, women are judged upon their clothing. Whether we show skin or cover-up, there are always people to comment on your clothing. These girls have the right to wear whatever makes them comfortable i.e. a hijab and I really feel bad that they are being frowned upon for the same.
