Doctors From Madurai Perform Successful Vaginal Construction Surgeries On Two Women

Up until very late in life, possibly class 8th or 9th when I had my first period, I could easily be mistaken for a boy instead of a girl. With adolescence kicking in late for me, whenever I recall my school days I shudder at how I looked before puberty. Good thing Facebook gave us all an option to hide our decade old photos to save us from the embarrassment. While we take puberty for granted, it’s not always as easy. And keeping just that in mind, these two doctors from Madurai did everything they could to perform a vaginal construction surgery on two women, who had underdeveloped vaginas and couldn’t attain puberty.

The surgery was undertaken after it was brought to notice that the two women suffer from Mullerian agenesis or Mayer – Rokitansky–Kuster–Hauser syndrome (MRKH), which is a congenital abnormality resulting in a missing uterus and variable degrees of under development of vagina.

Dr S Padma, head, department of gynaecology, in the hospital talked about the condition and the procedure of vaginal construction and shared, “When a girl attains puberty, it is a big celebration in the in the family. However, one in a thousand girls of reproductive age do not hit puberty on time. The reason could be a congenital defect known as vaginal agenesis, where girls may be born without a vagina or have the vaginal opening underdeveloped or blocked by layers of cells. This condition will have repercussions on fertility and sexual function. Only one in five thousand girls are diagnosed with it.”

We can only imagine how difficult and complicated the life of the two women would have been before this. This is important because of it has a a psychosocial impact on the women and could affect fertility and relationships in the future.

Dr Padma talked about the vaginal construction being minimally invasive and mentioned, “It involved creating a new vagina (neovagina) – that is, a vaginal canal. The procedure uses existing genital tissues to line the new vaginal canal. The advantages of laparoscopic Davydov are short operation time, and hospital stay. There will be no external scars.”

The accurate diagnosis and the construction of the vagina could offer a new lease of life to these women and for that we applaud the commitment of these doctors.
