After Losing Mother To COVID, Chennai Woman Drives An Oxygen Autorickshaw To Help Those In Need

The last few months have been excruciatingly difficult for us all. When India entered the second wave of the COVID pandemic, no one anticipated things to get as bad as they got. Medical professionals were overburdened, hospitals were packed to the brim and there was a severe dearth of life-saving equipment. Amid all the tales of death and destruction that were coming forth though, there were a few that warmed our hearts. People from all over the country joined hands to help fight the rising COVID cases. While some raised money and distributed food to the underprivileged, others assisted the frontline workers or arranged for oxygen cylinders. It’s this sense of community and selflessness that got me through the darkest phases of this pandemic. And now, even though cases are steadily dropping, people are continuing to do all they can to aid their communities. It’s so wholesome.

Recently, reports of a 36-year-old woman, Seetha Devi, from Chennai are coming to light. Amid this crisis, she is saving lives by providing oxygen to those who are in desperate need. Seetha drives a blue-coloured autorickshaw that is fitted with oxygen cylinders and she waits outside Rajiv Gandhi Hospital offering assistance to those waiting for a bed.

Seetha started helping people by providing oxygen after her mother passed away due to COVID on 1st May. They struggled to get a hospital bed and oxygen for about 12 hours. However, by the time they got a bed and a ventilator, it was too late. Seetha doesn’t want anyone to suffer the way her mother did and hence, she has undertaken this noble effort of providing oxygen to those who need it. Talking about her feat, Seetha said, “We saved more than three hundred patients gasping for breath that time. No questions were asked, no money was received. After my mother died, I decided no one should die for want of oxygen. Now there is an urgent need for oxygen. It’s the decision I took that day”.

Even though the oxygen crisis in our country is over, thankfully, Seetha continues to aid people by ferrying discharged patients back home. She also transports COVID patients from their homes to the health centres and has bought a few more oxygen cylinders for all those being treated at home.

We are so in awe of Seetha’s selfless contribution to this fight against the coronavirus. More power to her!
