Assam Woman Thrown Out Of Shop For Wearing Jeans And Not A Burqa. This Moral Policing Is Tiring!

Remember the incident that took place at a Delhi restaurant where a woman was not allowed inside because she was wearing a saree? Well, we have a similar situation yet again but the clothing item is different. In this case, a woman from Assam was thrown out of the shop for wearing jeans and not a burqa. Seriously? When will we understand that a woman can choose what she wants to wear at any given time? It’s her right to choose her choice of clothing and what is more comfortable for her. High-time we stop reacting to what a woman is wearing.

I mean, this woman from Assam was shamed and kicked out of a store by the shopkeeper, Nurul Amin, on October 25, only because she was wearing jeans and not a burqa. This case of moral policing took place in the Biswanath district of Assam.

And when the father of the woman went in to protest about the incident, the shopkeeper and two others assaulted him and were later arrested by the Assam police. Police sources revealed that the incident took place at a mobile phone accessories store in Biswanath Chariali.

According to the reports, the woman had gone there to buy a pair of earphones when Nurul Amin refused to give her the earphones and shamed her for wearing jeans. The Assam police said that the shopkeeper shamed her for not wearing a burqa and then pushed her out of the store.

The woman’s father who is also from Assam said, “My daughter was misbehaved and kicked out from Nurul’s shop for wearing jeans instead of a burqa. These people are trying to bring down the Taliban system in Assam and forcing girls to wear burqas and Hijab… We are born and brought up in Assam and follow Assamese culture. My daughter is pursuing a BCA (Bachelor of Computer Application). She has done her studies from a government school, not in private. She studied Assamese culture but now these people are trying to make her follow the Taliban style by wearing burqa and Hijab.”

The woman revealed that when she reached the shop, the owner, Nurul Amin told her that if she had gone to his house in jeans it would have impacted his house since his daughter-in-law wore a hijab or a burqa. In fact, when the woman’s father went to confront the owner, he got beaten up by the shopkeeper’s family members.

Rajen Singh, who is a senior police officer in Assam, said that they’ve arrested the main accused Nurul Amin, Suffiqul Islam, and Rafiqul Islam, and sent them to jail after the family members filed an FIR (First Information Report).

It really disturbs me to know that we as a society have become so intolerant and so patriarchal that we don’t even realize that we are suffocating our women. A woman, irrespective of her caste, religion, class, etc, can wear whatever she wants whether it is a burqa or a pair of jeans. And no one has the right to question it or shame her for the same.
