5 Movies Of 2019 That Were So Rubbish We Don’t Even Know Why They Released

I was looking at my bank balance the other day and wondering where all my money had gone. And I realised I had spent it all on popcorn. Yes, popcorn. Because this year, I went to the cinema a lot and unfortunately, a lot of times, this was to watch a movie so bad, the only thing keeping me going was how cheesy the popcorn was.

But not all of it was bad. And some of it was. So let’s say it was a mixed bag. Some that we have bookmarked for an eternity and others that we wish we could fast-forward while were sitting at the cinema. And while we are all for Bollywood’s efforts into mainstreaming movies with important issues and furthering feminism, we are deeply disappointed with a few of them.

Here is a list of 5 movies from 2019 that we wish were never released. These movies didn’t need to see the light of the day. We, Bollywood, innocent lambs – basically everyone was better off without these movies.

Dream Girl

Yes, you’re wondering why this is here, aren’t you? Because haha, it was so funny. But was it really? Or were you nervous giggling? Reducing the role of women, yet again, down to a seductress or someone meant to appease men, the story line may have been thick with one liners, but was completely bleak when it came down to adding substance into anyone’s life. And if that wasn’t enough, the not-so-subtle integration of Islamophobia that reinforced every stereotype is boring and could have been done without.

Kabir Singh

The movie that single handedly spit balled the already ill-informed society into furthering their prejudices against women and how they should treat them, this one technically tops the list. I should’ve just put it first but I didn’t want to be predictable. By introducing a character as flawed as Kabir Singh, the movie tried to justify everything – violence, misogyny, alcoholism – because character.  Later, the movie glorified the behaviour as the protagonist ends up with the girl. Content, that we dearly hope we could un-see, this movie has either ended up enraging the feminists and emboldening the roadside romeos, both of which could’ve been avoided, if this film didn’t release in the first place.

Student Of The Year 2

Another run of the mill movie by Dharma Productions, with no head or tail and a budget inversely proportional to the substance , this movie honestly was one of the more pointless pieces of cinema that we saw. Introducing two new stars, with a lack of story, talent and everything, this movie may not have stereotyped women, but surely stereotyped the men with its unoriginal and unfunny songs. This shouldn’t have been released.

Pati Patni Aur Woh

A remake that faced a lot of flak from the moment it released its posters was so shit we don’t even know why anyone thought it warranted a whole movie. For starters, it served us rubbish from the first second by highlighting the wife in a saree and the mistress in a mini dress. To top all of that, using dialogues that were insensitive to rape victims and survivors, and having the nerve to defend it with fuck all logic, this movie did no service to the society and that is that.

Marjaavan

We like how the movie’s title gives away our feelings. We did wish death on ourselves than sitting through this movie that had a weak storyline and used Tara Sutaria in the movie as a mere prop. A sequel to the equally disliked Ek Villain, this was a textbook example of how filmmakers often use women as furniture, not lending them enough screen time or dialogues to make their presence known.
