A Stalker Shot A 20-Year-Old Woman Just A Few Hours After Her Wedding. Can We Teach Men To Handle Rejection, Please?

On December 1, a 20-year-old woman was shot at by a stalker who is reportedly her neighbour. The neighbour was stalking and harassing the woman for two months. The case is from Sonipat, Haryana. Tanishka, the victim, is undergoing treatment at PGIMS, Rohtak. As per reports, the victim’s condition is critical. The incident took place just a few hours after the 20-year-old woman got married.

The police arrested the main accused, Sahil, with two minors who were also involved on December 5, with a six-member SIT formed by Rohtak SP Udai Singh Meena. An FIR has been filed under various sections of the IPC, including Section 307 (attempt to murder), and sections of the Arms Act.

The victim was on her way to Bhali-Anandpur village with her husband Mohan, and her brother-in-law Sunil when their car was intercepted by an SUV. The victim’s husband informed the police that there were three men in the SUV, out of which two, who were armed, got out and asked him to open the door. When he did that, the accused stalker took the car keys and fired multiple shots at Tanishka. The victim’s brother-in-law who was driving the car, tried to intervene but they assaulted him, snatched his gold chain, and fled after firing a few gunshots in the air.

The incident took place late at night. They were on their way to Mohan’s house at the time. Haryana police registered a case under various sections of the IPC and the Arms Act against Sahil, and two others. As per a report in The Indian Express, the police investigation has revealed that the accused had snatched a car from a local businessman which was then used to commit the crime. They later abandoned the car at a dhaba near a bus stand. The police recorded the statement of the businessman, who told that the three armed masked men threatened him and stole his car when he was returning home on Wednesday around 7:30 pm.

Meanwhile, the national spokesperson of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Surendar Jain demanded “enactment of a law to prevent such incidents”, reported Times of India. Jain said that two panchayat meetings were held at the victim’s native village, where they “demanded a law on ‘love jihad’ to prevent such crimes.” I think that a law to protect people against stalking and punishing stalkers as quickly as possible would really help. A senior Haryana police officer informed The Quint that the investigation is on and so far and the case doesn’t appear communal in nature.

Stalking is one of the most frequently experienced forms of abuse all over the world. It is a pattern of repeat and persistent unwanted behaviour that is intrusive and engenders fear which can turn into such incidents where the stalker does not hesitate to commit a crime. I don’t understand why a grown-up man cannot understand a simple ‘no’ for an answer and why we as a society are okay with men having such a fragile ego?
