Emily’s Wardrobe In The Season 2 Of ‘Emily In Paris’ Proves “Too much good taste is boring”

Well, well, post a binge-watch session of the much-awaited Netflix show Emily In Paris, all I have been dreaming about is Gabriel (played by Lucas Bravo) and the mildly fabulous yet colourful closet of Emily Cooper who returns with Season 2 of the show. A feast to the eye and a window to my dream wonderland, Emily takes up the job of living a life and wearing clothes, that live rent-free in my fantasies. And after watching the vivacious lineup of her costumes this season, I guess costume stylist Marylin Fitoussi’s words “Too much good taste can be boring” make a little more sense now. From some candy pop polo t-shirts, vintage sunglasses, high-on print overcoats to headscarves, there’s not even a single cell that hasn’t been dressed well (or at times over-dressed). Mirroring the web world we’ve been living in for years now, Emily just like us never misses to update her OOTDs even after a mental breakdown (pretty much how I operate my Instagram). A Carrie Bradshaw in making (still under construction), Emily’s got the right ingredients to weave a well-knitted iconic wardrobe, but what seems to get off the train just like Mathieu (spoiler alert), is the visible effort by the designer duo, which at times isn’t pleasing to watch.

With costume designers, Patricia Field (known for her work in The Devil Wears Prada and Sex And The City) and Marylin Fitoussi curating the show’s fashion script, what brought to light was the deliberate attempt to make each piece ask for the viewer’s attention (which it successfully did). Portraying an applaudable work of fashion when it comes to dressing up Emily’s best buds Camille and Mindy, the much hindi daily soap like script offers a runway like charm if not anything more.

In an attempt to not replicate season one, designers Patricia Field and Marylin Fitoussi have definitely added to our kitty of quirky accessories. Offering a blend of vintage and modern, the wacky shades, futuristic silhouettes, and loads of frills take the centre stage in the latest instalment of the show. So, let’s get right into my most favourite, soon to be trendsetter pieces, that shine above the much avant-garde closet.

Bags That Need Your Attention

Making a strong case for some quirky buckets, Emily’s collection of bags is enviable. From sporting Dolce and Gabbana, patterned mini trunks, scoubidou bag to the iconic and current fashion’s favourite Prada crystal pink bag in shades, orange, green, lavender, Emily pretty much hates to repeat her lovable arm candies. And amidst the craze of the baguettes all thanks to the Sex And The City reboot, Emily’s closet makes way for glittery micro bags. With a capacity to fit absolutely nothing, micro bags catch the eye and urge you to press the pause button for a closer view.

Bold Footwear

Wearing a lot more colour on her feet, the marketing executive from Chicago loves to experiment with her footwear. From Dora Teymur’s lavender boots to Skorpios’ knee-high Nappa Brandy boots, Emily brings the lost obsession of boots (in colours) to life again. And my favourite is definitely the pink pair of Jimmy Choo from her birthday episode (something I would trade anything for). Ladies, this is a sign to amp up your shoe game.

Fun overcoats

Gone are the days when overcoats dipped in mundane browns would top our winter wear stack. Nothing less than a cosy dream, the multi-hued, floral printed XXL coats on Emily let us live in the spirit of Audrey Hepburn with a Gen-Z twist. Stitching together vintage silhouettes with vibrant shades, Emily adores her winter wearables from designer labels like Vassilis Zoulias, Chanel and Elie Saab presenting a trend in the making.

The glove gala

“I wanted to introduce these gloves that I personally enjoy wearing. Gloves were from a bygone time, and today the only reason we wear gloves is to stay warm when it’s cold. So it’s a new accessory, in a way, for this generation, but it’s a young accessory,” mentions costume designer Patricia Field and we quite agree. From pop pink, deep mauve to taxi yellow, the fingerless gloves add more character to Emily’s wardrobe that is on a colourful spree.

Silhouettes That Speak

Returning in an all-new bold avatar, Emily flaunts her affection for loud and flouncy attires. Be it the iconic Magali Pascal botanic dress in the shade purple, her birthday bow bodycon from Rotate Birger Christensen or the romantic red Giambattista Valli x H&M long tulle dress she wore to the finale episode, every piece is playful and redefines statement dressing, often falling for the outlandish half.

But all things said and done, the closet speaks a thousand (at times a million) words that might not score high in a French fashion exam or be labelled as ‘amusante’ just how Aflie says but stitches together the character that Lily Collins portrays phenomenally.
