Kate Middleton’s Ensemble On Commonwealth Day Stood In Solidarity With Ukraine. Fashion Becomes An Expression Of Hope Amid War
The Russia-Ukraine war has been grabbing news headlines and creating a situation of distress around the world. While many celebrities have used the medium of red carpet and fashion week runways to lend monetary and emotional support to the sufferers of Ukraine, fashion yet again has become a tool of expression here. Sending a heartfelt message to the world watching the sufferings of Ukraine and its people, many celebrities have showcased their solidarity with the country, not vocally but through the colours on their wearables. It was only a few weeks back when Balenciaga welcomed guests at the year’s Paris Fashion Week, to seats painted in hues of grief and the Ukrainian flag. A proof of celebrity support was also displayed by Lady Gaga, Greta Lee, Michael Douglas, Andrew Garfield and more at the prestigious SAG Awards. And now joining that list is Kate Middleton.

Marking her presence on Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey alongside Prince William, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Kate Middleton’s outfit for the event had a strong message to deliver. Opting for a wool coat dress, headlined by a silk velvet collar, the Catherine Walker & Co ensemble was mindfully accessorised with a matching pillbox hat, sapphire and diamond jewellery. Speaking about her support to Ukraine in length, the sapphire and diamond jewellery came from the archives of her ensemble, that she wore to meet Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his wife, Olena Zelensky, at Buckingham Palace in October 2020. Moreover, Kate Middleton’s choice of colour–blue (one of Ukraine’s national colours) expressed her support.

Well, the Duchess of Cambridge never shies away from extending help in times of global crisis, this message indeed exhibited her solidarity with Ukraine. Not just that but Kate Middleton and Prince William issued a joint statement earlier this month. Supporting Ukraine amid the crisis, the couple wrote, “In October 2020 we had the privilege to meet President Zelenskyy and the First Lady to learn of their hope and optimism for Ukraine’s future. Today we stand with the President and all of Ukraine’s people as they bravely fight for that future.”

Responding to which President Zelensky, shared “Olena and I are grateful to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Royal Family, that at this crucial time when Ukraine is courageously opposing Russia’s invasion, they stand by our country and support our brave citizens.”
