FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week Promised A Flavourful Fabric Play And Here Are Our Top Picks For Your Festive Closet

The season of festivals calls for a major closet upgrade. With the recently departed FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week, we spotted a bunch of fresh hues, consciously cut silhouettes and sustainability taking headlining the runway. For designers, this season was all about glitters. The much-needed homecoming of high-octane, festive glamour, was masterfully weaved into every product that found a way in designer collections. Alongside the impressive colour palettes, accessory choices and patterns, what caught our attention was the incorporation of cheerful fabrics. Keeping the usual classics aside, designers pointed out regal silk, brocade, and tissue to stitch the sparkle well. Fabrics that will urge you to replace your love for embroideries with a subtle shine, silk ruled many designer collections.

Besides finding a special spot on the runway, silk and brocade found newer forms and shapes to reach their customers. For a change, this glimmering textile skipped the old-school saree format and arrived in cocktail dresses, power suits and kurta sets. Velvet also ran the race for a handful of designer collections, to remind viewers of the upcoming season of winter. Jewel tones stood right next to vermillion red and electric blue to serve every fashion appetite. So, if you’re looking for a little experiment in your festive fabric picks, take a look at some of our favourites at FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week.

The Traditional Touch

Travelling back to the traditional routes were designers Anju Modi and Gaurang Shah, who exhibited the rich history of Indian textiles through their mood boards. For the two celebrated designers, handcrafted weaves like–Kanjeevaram, Paithan, and Banaras, alongside sustainable modal, brought in a touch of nostalgia and festive charm. A classic pick in these fabrics can be twisted into modern-day combinations like–shararas, coordinated sets, and pantsuits.

Romancing Velvet

For shoppers from relatively colder belt of the country, velvet makes up for a no-brainer choice. Known for its innate shimmer, and comfortable feel, designers like–Shyamal and Bhumika, and Anju Modi arrived with the flavours of this fabric. On the parading models, we saw a slice of this material through short kurta sets, embellished shrugs, blouses and wrap dupattas.

Twinkling Net

Giving a big nod to the see-through, sheer trend was the net fabric. A perfect pick for the season of cheer, net sarees, fishnet stockings and daring face masks were the game-changing elements of every look. Well described by designer Gaurav Gupta, was his vision towards the fabric. The successful return of this twinkling textile was visible through sarees, half-veils and cocktail dresses.

Futuristic Cord

Designers explored a theatrical mood through garment construction and textile choices. Putting the craft of cord work under the spotlight were designs by Gaurav Gupta, and Amit Aggarwal, who presented the craft through a multitude of concept sarees, skirts, and gowns. The technique here was to build an artistic look, using floral, exaggerated motifs and twisted shoulders. With the gradually rising popularity of this fabric on designer shelves, buyers can find themselves in swimming in a much wider variety of silhouettes and fabric options, as they dress up for occasions.

Tackling Tassels

Through various designer presentations, we found ourselves bonding with the craft of tasselled, shredded fabrics. In terms of pearl-laden weaves, distressed muslin, and fluid threadwork, designers inaugurated a unique flavour of festive dressing. The drama-stitched silhouettes by designers–Abhishek Sharma, Geisha Designs, Saaksha and Kinni and Anamika Khanna’s AK-OK played around this technique to form interesting combinations.

Shimmer, Sequin And Sparkle

No festive look can ever be complete without a tablespoon of sparkle. This urge to serve customers with the right bling, prompted designers to bring back the disco-ball-inspired sequin fabrics. In collections by Abraham and Thakore, Shahab Durazi, and Shantnu and Nikhil, we spotted heavy incorporation of dyed sequin fabric in shades of black, highlighter green and marshmallow pink.
