Zareen Khan Rubbishes Assumptions Of Salman Khan Being Her Godfather, Says ‘ I Can Not Be A Monkey On His Back’

Bollywood has contributed in building the image of female characters in a film that is often as good as a flower vase. Thanks to the high-on music, masala, sexist, plot lines, that have offered actresses nothing but a mere song or two, leaving deep scars. And mending these flaws, female celebrities are voicing their ideologies and questioning their characters in a narrative that go beyond being the ‘bubbly love interest’ of the hero. Be it actresses like Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone or Taapsee Pannu, women in films are changing the lens and curating a fresh vision for the audiences today. Stepping out of roles, that indicate their position being lesser than their male counterparts, actresses are thankfully taking the right steps. Adding her name to the list now, is actress Zareen Khan, who talked about the assumptions that stated Salman Khan being her godfather in the industry and shared with a portal, “ There have been times when I felt lost in the industry. I wanted to do good work but I wasn’t allowed to show my acting talent and what I could bring to the table. There were preconceived notions about me, as I was just a pretty face. A lot of people still have that assumption. I’m thankful to Salman because I would’ve never entered the industry if it was not for me. He gave me an entrance to the industry. But my struggle started after I became a part of the industry because then I knew nothing.”

She further added, “Salman is an amazing person but he is also a busy man. I cannot be a monkey on his back and bother him for little things. A lot of people to date think that all the work I do is through him and that’s not true. Salman is a friend and just a phone call away but I’m not pestering him. And that undermines the struggle, the hard work that I’ve done.”

While it’s not the first time that the Veer actress, vocalised about her struggles in Bollywood and the times when looking for good scripts became a task. She earlier stated about her fight with preconceived notions, and the number of times makers were sceptical to offer her films, for being ‘a pretty face.’ She at times also opened up about the industry’s idea to conform to a shape, which is why her weight was almost a national issue, back in the day.

While women in the world of films have been struggling to break the stereotypes or hold the ability to shoulder big-budget films, often their success is credited to their male co-actors. Then be it female writers like Kanika Dhillon, who is the mind behind films like Haseen Dillruba and Manmarziyaan or producer/directors like Zoya Akhtar, Rima Kagti, Rhea Kapoor, gifting us films like Gully Boy and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, women are taking the centre stage through many roles in the business, and are setting great examples, making the industry a better place to be in.
