Sona Mohapatra Has A Problem With Indians Celebrating Halloween. Don’t We Have Actual Problems In This Country To Worry About?
I have never been to a Halloween party but I promise it isn’t because I am an introvert who doesn’t talk to anyone. It is because I am personally too self-conscious to go to wear costumes to a party. Having said that, I do want to attend a Halloween party at some point in my life. Until then, I have resorted to live vicariously through other people celebrating the spooky season in full fervour. However, for some reason, many have decided to be offended over people celebrating Halloween this year with multiple people and pages taking to the internet and calling those that enjoy the festival as “wannabes”. I personally don’t understand what is the issue with people celebrating something as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone but clearly I am one of the few people who believe in personal choices. Singer Sona Mohapatra has taken to Twitter and tweeted about how Indians shouldn’t celebrate Halloween because Americans don’t celebrate Diwali. Yeah, I am confused.
all these ‘Halloween’ revellers in our cities, happy they have a reason to dress up & party & all?.. but sorry to me , also reeks of thoda ‘wannabe’ism’. Imagine American’s lighting Diya’s, dressing in Desi clothes & saying – ‘off to a Diwali party’… not happening anytime soon.

Okay… so her issue is that Indians are celebrating Halloween while Americans aren’t celebrating Diwali? I don’t understand why we have to decide what we do or don’t do based on what Americans do. And why is the focus on America when countries like Canada, UK, Mexico, and Spain celebrate it too? Moreover, there are more than enough Indians in America that celebrate Diwali there as well and invite a lot of their American friends, regardless of race or nationality. I am certain that almost all of us have friends who live abroad and have seen stories of them enjoying or hosting Diwali celebrations with their friends overseas. So I believe it is extremely ignorant of Sona to say that Americans don’t attend or celebrate Diwali in any shape or form. And I am not the only one as many have called out how mistaken she is on Twitter.

Sorry, Sona. US Postal Service has a Diwali stamp. It is celebrated in the White House, a tradition started by President Obama. The City of NY will have Diwali as a public holiday from 2023. https://t.co/IADiyiCfme. Mainstream Americans do participate in our Diwali festivities. pic.twitter.com/Dw6Oq3bLo3

They do, come to Arziona state University, a huge Americans celebrate the Diwali, Ganpati and holi with indians folks. If you only get out of your frog in the well mentality then only you will be able to see goodness in world.

Yep. And also, it doesn't matter if Americans do it or not.
She is asking Indians to not copy Americans by actually asking them to copy them. 😂😂 If they choose to not celebrate foreign festivals, why should we choose the same? Why the obsession?

That’s already happening .. a lot of Americans come to Diwali parties & dress in Indian clothes. Happened in our San Jose office, the city of John’s Creek in GA & several other places in my knowledge alone.

I don’t understand what everyone’s issue is with others being happy. Like let them celebrate what they want to, who cares? Why is it “wannabe-ism” if someone celebrates a non-Indian holiday? It is weird to me that while many Indians are proud to see Americans embracing our culture, they are still offended when Indians do the same. If Halloween isn’t your thing, that’s fine but let others enjoy what they want to, right? Live and let live.
