Pati Patni Aur Woh Do Review: Ayushmann Khurrana, Sara Ali Khan’s Film Makes Us Question Our Life Choices!

I wonder, how long till I finally get to watch a good and funny comedy of errors from Bollywood? But while we wait for that to happen, here’s a review of Ayushmann Khurrana’s much-awaited film Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, directed by Mudassar Aziz. It also stars Sara Ali Khan, Rakul Preet Singh and Wamiqa Gabbi. Does this comedy of errors promote infidelity, umm, just by mistake, nothing intentional! To know the rest of our thoughts (we have many), go on and read this article.

Plot

Prajapati (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a forest officer, and he does a good job at it. This is established in the first 5 minutes of the film. Wamiqa Gabbi is a journalist and Prajati’s wife. Sara Ali Khan Chanchal is his good friend, and Rakul Preet Singh is Prajapati’s colleague and the couple’s best friend. Now, the plot! In an attempt to help his friend Chanchal get the love of her life, Sunny (Vishal Vasistha), Prajapati falls into a huge problem, which leads to another and then another. The confusion keeps piling up to a level where Prajapati’s wife thinks he has an affair with the two other women, and someone else too. Tigmansh Dhulia plays a Minister and Sunny’s father. Vijay Raaz is the corrupt police officer, and Durgesh Kumar plays a goon. Everyone has a role to play in adding to this chaotic plot.

And no points for guessing, but in the climax, the confusion is resolved in an overdramatic setting. Everything ends well.

What Doesn’t Work?

The Plot

There is absolutely nothing refreshing in the plot. Not just in the story but also in the characterisation, the dialogues and the jokes. Let the truth be told! The format feels overused and redundant. The lead male character falling into a trap of chaos and confusion, because the circumstances don’t permit him to communicate, does not feel convincing. We have seen such helpless male leads romancing multiple women in the plot several times. Yes, it’s against his will, haalat ka dosh hai (Blame it on the situation).

While the premise is, of course, overdone, no real effort has been made to make it funny. The comedy is also trash. In 2026, if we are still relying on double-meaning cringe jokes, or demeaning LGBTQ+ jokes and 100 other ways of objectifying women, then I am sorry, we are only regressing. These jokes only add to the problematic mindset, no matter how much social messaging is put in the end.

Talking about the female characters in the film, well, no surprises there, they are disappointing too. There is one manipulative woman, a man-hater and of course a wife. All the female characters are superficial, and they have nothing to do with reality. That’s the problem. Not one female character brings a new POV to the narrative or to the audience. Another stereotypical representation. At least, let’s try to make the intentions of each character look convincing, especially that of Sara Ali Khan.

In films today, we hardly get to see a city as the character in the film. The same thing happens here. In the name of Varanasi, we are just given the Ganga ghat shot. UP does not feel UP, and more like everything is just a set. Believe it or not, this bothers. The charm and essence of any city only add to the experience of watching the film, and that is mostly missing in films these days.

To top it all, the climax of Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is the final test of your patience. The “What is happening, bro?” peak hits when all the characters gather in one place for the showdown. But expect an animal, here too!

Dialogues, Songs

I had a difficult time with the dialogues. They are exaggerated, and the UP accent feels forced most of the time. Maybe because of the overdramatic nature of the characters.

Female character problem aside, every opportunity has been used to add a sensual song in the film, even if it affects the plot, or is just randomly sandwiched in between. And the much bigger problem here is that the music album is not appealing.

Performances

Ayushmann Khurrana is a fine actor, and we have seen him do films on social dramas before. The actor always had a knack for comedy, but his character struggles with being annoying and exhausting. Ayushmann Khurrana’s performance can do nothing to save it. The same issues apply to the other lead actors in the film, like Sara Ali Khan, Rakul Preet Singh and Wamiqa Gabbi. These actors deserved much better writing. The only time some comic relief was felt in the plot was in some scenes that featured Vijay Raaz, Durgesh Kumar and Tigmanshu Dhulia, but these are short-lived.

Verdict

Mudassar Aziz’s Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is not an engaging or refreshing film. It plays with the same kind of comedy of errors template. Expect one or two gags. That’s about it. The film hit theatres on Friday, May 15.
