Oscars 2022 Complete Winners List: ‘CODA’ Wins Best Picture, Jane Campion Is Best Director, ‘Dune’ Sweeps Technical Awards

The 94th Academy Awards, the biggest night in film, returned to corporeal form this year as the Oscars 2022, to be held at their original venue, the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The ceremony also marks a return to having a host, after going host-less post Jimmy Kimmel in 2018, but it wasn’t just one host. For the first time in history, three women—female comedians Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and Amy Schumer—would be hosting the Oscars. This year, the Best Picture nominees include 10 titles. The Power Of The Dog, directed by Jane Campion, leads with 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, both Best Supporting Actor categories and Best Actor. Dune, directed by Denis Villenueve, has 10 nominations, including Best Picture, and quite a few technical ones Editing has already won for Sound, Editing, and Original Score. And finally, Belfast, directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh, and West Side Story, the musical by Steven Spielberg, have bagged seven nominations each.

A pre-taped ceremony, hosted by Jason Momoa and Josh Brolin, announced winners in eight out of the 23 Oscar categories. At the ceremony, presenters include the likes of Lady Gaga, Samuel L. Jackson, Shawn Mendes, Tyler Perry, Jamie Lee Curtis, Rachel Zegler, Halley Bailey, Zoë Kravitz, Simu Liu, Jacob Elordi, Tyler Perry, Lily James and more. The ceremony began with Venus and Serena Williams announcing the performance of “Be Alive” by Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Darius Scott, a Best Original Song nominee from King Richard.  There was a special tribute montage for 60 years of James Bond, though for some reason, it didn’t end with a performance of ‘No Time To Die’, nominated for Best Original Song. Rather bizarre, no?

This year too, the awards were not without their share of controversies, what with its bid to increase viewership resulting in a rather ridiculous and highly snubbed decision of cutting eight categories out of its televised programming. 8 out of the 23 categories were presented in a ceremony hosted an hour before the show by Jason Momoa and Josh Brolin, and then the taping of the winners’ speeches was shown at intervals during the ceremony. These included the awards for Documentary (Short Subject), Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Production Design, Short Film (Animated), Short Film (Live Action) and Sound.

Another decision that has received backlash is the addition of an Oscars Fan Favourite category in a bid to democratize the awards *rolls eyes* The voting happened through Twitter, where fans voted on their favourite movie of 2021, regardless of whether it received an Oscar nomination.

At the Governor’s Awards held on March 25, 2022, Samuel L. Jackson, Elaine May, and Liv Ullmann were awarded Honorary Oscars for their contribution to the art. Meanwhile, Danny Glover received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
