Here’s Why Internet Is Drawing Comparisons Between The Odyssey, Ramayana!

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, has hit theatres. The film has received praise across the world. The cinematic brilliance of the film has captured everyone’s attention already. However, the internet is also making comparisons of the Greek Mythology with the Indian Epic, the Ramayana. A few instances in both the epics seem to have something in common. Read here to know more about it.

The Odyssey Comparisons With Ramayana

One of the common things between The Odyssey and Ramayana is the Queen’s test, the stringing of the bow. Queen Penelope’s one condition for the suitors was to string the bow, but nobody could do it except King Odysseus, disguised as a poor man. This is quite similar to Sita’s Swayamvar, where the condition to choose a husband was by stringing the bow that belonged to Lord Shiva. This is the most evident similarity between the two epics. Although the test was the same, in The Odyssey, Penelope uses this to show all the suitors that none of them was capable enough to have her except Odysseus, and in Ramayana, only Lord Rama was meant to be with Sita.

The Odyssey is an epic myth written by the Greek poet Homer. The film follows Odysseus’ (King of Ithaca) journey back home, when he gets lost at sea along with his men. After returning to Ithaca, he disguises himself as a poor man and then wins back Queen Penelope from the hundreds of suitors waiting in line. The internet has opined that it is quite similar to Lord Rama having to rescue Sita when she was held captive by Raavan. However, the circumstances under which these two fights happened were completely different.
