‘Double XL’ Trailer: Huma Qureshi And Sonakshi Sinha’s Attempt At Addressing Body-Shaming Fails To Come Through

Society has never been size-inclusive. People who do not fall into the idealised weight bracket have always been on the receiving end of ridicule, insults and fat shaming. What people fail to realise is how their meaning of a joke ends up traumatising people and they have severe body-image issues. As films have always been said to reflect society and when such films bring social issues to light, it makes a lot of difference. A film titled Double XL is based on this same issue of two women who are not seen for their talents but only for their weight. The movie stars Huma Qureshi and Sonakshi Sinha in titular roles and is directed by Satramm Ramani. The trailer of the movie was dropped on October 12, 2022.

The three-minute-long trailer video shows the struggle of Huma who plays the role of Rajshree and Sonakshi who essays the role of Saira. They are heartbroken as they see their dreams crashing in front of their eyes because people think they are ‘too’ fat to pursue anything substantial. Rajshree wants to become a sports presenter but her mother only wants to get her married whereas Saira learns that her boyfriend is cheating on her with a ‘slimmer’ girl.

They two meet while they are crying in the same washroom (kucch zyada hi coincidence, but okay). They decide to help each other by moving to London. The rest of the trailer is just a montage of them trying to live their dream away from societal pressures and partying when they succeed.

The message that the trailer gave was quite solid. Fat shaming is common everywhere and people think it is okay to pass comments on someone’s weight without realising how much it affects the opposite person. But the problem I have with the trailer is it ended up showing the entire movie in three minutes. They should have left something for the big screen also, na! Plus, I fail to understand how Rajshree’s orthodox mother allows her to go to London alone when she does not even approve of her career in her own city. It is quite problematic when movies show selectively progressive parents.

I really wished they had shown both Rajshree and Saira making their names in India rather than in London because then it does not make people relate. The whole point of a film based on this issue is to make people relate to their problems. The makers have tried to address an important issue but its presentation has gotten lost. The trailer looks like a half-baked plot with fukat ke bhaari dialogues, and I don’t think I like it! Double XL will hit theatres on November 4, 2022.

Television sports presenter Mayanti Langer, in an exclusive chat with Hauterrfly, spoke about how people were more interested in her outfits than her cricket knowledge.
