‘Ammu’ Trailer: Aishwarya Lekshmi Starrer Shows A Domestic Violence Survivor’s Journey Of Fighting Back And Breaking Free

After Taapsee Pannu starrer Thappad, it was Alia Bhatt and Shefali Shah’s Darlings that highlighted the cruel reality of many wives who have been abused at the hands of their own husbands. And now, it is a Telugu movie that is set to show what happens when a woman is fed up with domestic violence and decides to fight back. Yep, this is what seems to be the plot of Ammu – Prime Video’s first-ever Telugu Original movie – starring Aishwarya Lekshmi, Naveen Chandra, and Simha in the lead. Ammu is a story of a common housewife who is a victim of domestic violence and instead of quietly succumbing to it, she decides to fight back and break free from her abusive husband.

On October 11, the makers of Ammu dropped its trailer and having watched it, I can tell you that this one will be heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. The movie is written and directed by Charukesh Sekar and stars Aishwarya Lekshmi, Naveen Chandra, and Simha in the lead.

The trailer begins with showing Ammu being happily married to her neighbour Mr. Ravi, who is a police officer. However, the honeymoon period ends soon, and that too with him slapping her. She goes ahead and tells her mother about it and the mother asks, “What did you do?”. A simple but yet powerful question that highlights the brutal reality of the world we live in – no matter what, it is always a woman’s fault.

Moving along, we then see Ammu taking a stand for herself in front of her husband. But like most other cases, the husband suppresses her voice and doesn’t let her reveal the reality to anyone. She then gets good at hiding the abusive marks he leaves on her face until she can’t anymore. Around the middle, the trailer shows her getting fed up with domestic violence and taking it upon herself to reveal his true identity to the world. The trailer ends with him holding her face in a tight grip, and her simply patting his face and telling him that she isn’t scared of him anymore.

Ngl, the end of the trailer of Ammu is so much more powerful than any other trailer I’ve seen in a while. The end shows how the tables had turned and that he could no longer scare her. It shows that at that point she was done being a punching bag and was ready to take him head-on (not physically maybe, but most definitely emotionally and mentally). And along with powerful, it is also extremely inspiring to many women who think that they won’t be able to get out of it. I haven’t watched the movie, so I don’t know how it ends but I can sure say that this movie is going to give hope to hundreds of other women going through similar situations.

The movie is produced by Stone Bench and its creative Producer is filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj. The movie is set to tram across 240+ countries and territories in Telugu and in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi dubs.

Ammu will stream from October 19.
