6 Common Traps Used To Lure Women Into Human Trafficking And How To Avoid Them

As per the NCRB report, a total of 2,189 cases of human trafficking cases were registered across India in 2021. The number spiked by 27.7% as compared to the 1,714 cases reported in 2020. What’s more shocking is that 5,755 people were arrested in the 2,189 human trafficking cases. And these are just the cases that were reported and registered with the authorities. Considering the cases that go unreported, it’s essential to be careful as a woman in the society we live in. While we might be talking about amping up women’s safety and guiding men in the right direction, at the end of the day as a woman, the responsibility of our safety falls on our shoulders and this is why we must be extremely careful and learn to spot the traps laid by the people involved in human trafficking rackets.

Here’s A List Of The Most Common Types Of Traps That Women Should Avoid In Order To Remain Safe

1. The Most Common – Love Trap

Remember how Alia Bhatt’s Gangu in Gangubai Kathiawadi was forced into sex work by a man who faked romance with her and later sold her to a madam in Mumbai’s red light area, Kamathipura? This is the most common trap used by people working in human trafficking rackets. And these men continue to get smart with the growing time and age and use new and fresh tactics to trap women. It’s essential to keep an eye out for such traps and the best way to do it is to do a thorough background check on a man and trust your gut when you feel something is off. No matter how much you trust a man, if you feel even an iota of doubt, don’t shy away from stepping away from the situation for your own safety.

2. Fake Job Traps

Another common trap laid by human traffickers is offering jobs located outside one’s state or country to lure women into applying. These offers often seem genuine but appealing because they’re designed in a manner to lure women without raising a doubt. Before you take up a job and move to another city or country, run a background check on the organisation. Even if it seems genuine, contact the organisation to find out if it’s legitimate or not before you go ahead with it.

3. Kidnapping

It’s not uncommon for kidnapped women to be forced into the flesh trade. While there’s nothing much that can be done about random kidnapping, one can play safe when out and about. Never share too many personal details with anyone you meet online, mind your drinks when you’re out in order to avoid being roofied and kidnapped, and avoid sharing geotagged pictures or videos on your social media handle while you’re still at the same location instead wait to leave the location before you share such content. Beware of warning signs that may hint that you are being “groomed” or prepared or recruited in a human trafficking racket.

4. Debt Payment

It’s extremely important to be careful when you take a loan from someone to know if the person in question is legit and trustworthy or not. Taking loans from local lenders and untrustworthy people can put one at the risk. Some of these lenders may turn out to be monsters who push people into the flesh trade under the guise of debt payment.

5. Quick Money

Any deals, offers or jobs that promise quick money are 100% unsafe. There’s no way to earn a quick buck and while we’re all for smart work vs hard work, know when something is too good to be true, it’s probably a fraud. Do not get lured into such schemes that may land you in the middle of the flesh trade.

6. Blackmail

TBH, we all share nudes and make all those sexy videos. It’s far more common than we’d like to accept but trusting the wrong people can and will land you in unsafe and hostile situations. No matter how much you trust someone, never share nude pictures or videos with them that show your face. Avoid going to a hotel that seems shady with someone who you’re not well acquainted with. Always, always check for hidden cameras in hotel rooms. People working with human trafficking rackets use intimate pictures and videos to blackmail women into the flesh trade. So, even if someone attempts to blackmail you, never give in. Go to the authorities. It might land you in trouble with your parents and family but at least it won’t land you in the flesh trade or any other unsafe situation.
