Twitter Question Sudha Murthy’s Gesture To Show Respect Towards A Mysore Royal. Umm, Why Do These Traditions Still Exist?
Social media amuses me, honestly. The kind of debates that start on social media platforms, particularly Twitter just make you think about things that you might not have thought otherwise. Social media users dig out topics and angles from the past like currently the debate happening over a 2019 picture of the famous Indian author and philanthropist, Sudha Murthy. Of course, it’s just not her, but a picture of her bowing down to a member of Mysore’s Royal Family. Now, see authors are supposed to be progressive in terms of their thoughts and actions, so Sudha Murthy following an age-old tradition of showing respect is clearly not an acceptable sight for social media users. And therefore the speculations and debates over this have begun on Twitter.

Sudha Murthy is a multi-talented woman. Apart from being a published author, she is the co-founder of the very successful business venture, Infosys. The picture that is doing rounds on social media is from an event that was organised to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the last Mysore King, Jayachamaraja Wadiyar. Sudha Murthy also marked her presence in this function, and the picture was a click of her bowing down to Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, a member of the royal family, in a very traditional way, almost like “dandvat pranaam”.
Now, the picture has surfaced on social media and people are questioning this action of Sudha Murthy, clearly because she is a role model for all of us. Twitter users are having a hard time digesting this fact. There are also some users who showed curiosity in knowing whether such traditions still exist in today’s time. The picture was first shared by a Twitter user with name Shyam S.Prasad, who is a journalist. Many people came to this tweet, to put forth their views on the picture.

Well, some users justified this act by Sudha Murthy by giving reasons that there was nothing wrong with this gesture.

It's not just culture, We need to bow down to them coz they have done so much to the people during their rule.

That's our culture. Keyboard Leli journalists won't understand. Irrespective of age, stature, position everyone bows to Rajamatha. Her culture has taught her this.

But others clearly showed their disappointment in Sudha Murthy.

Oh god🤦🏻♂️… is that Sudha murthy? Bowing in front of royalty? The mindset we have it in our blood, no amount of wealth and achievements would remove that from our behaviour…

You know now that I think about it, what was the need of even bowing down to the kings, weren’t they just doing their jobs? And it is indeed shocking to see that these traditional ways are still being carried out today. There are other ways of showing respect, right?
