Twitter Discusses Why India’s Low Divorce Rate Is Nothing To Be Proud Of. Hard Agree!
This is an eye-opener for people who disagree! It’s mostly the women who bear the brunt of unhappy marriages. For women, getting a divorce has never been or will be an easy decision. Especially in a country like India, where values and societal standards are always given more importance than a person’s feelings, divorce is still a step that is looked down upon! Recently, a Twitter user shared India’s ranking in divorce cases and pointed out reasons to prove that the stats were not something to be proud of. Well, if you do think otherwise, you should definitely take a look at this discussion that happened on the social media site.
A Twitter user by the name of Sai shared the divorce rate statistics of all the countries, including India. Now as per the data, India’s divorce rate was 1%. It may seem like very positive news but as pointed out by the user in her tweet, before we feel proud, let’s stop and ponder over these points! The user clearly stated that the 1% rate of divorces in India only represented the number of unhappy marriages that fail to break because of various societal reasons. The Twitter user highlighted the fact that majority of the Indians consider divorce as a taboo, and ignore it as an option in problematic marriages.

Another Twitter user pointed out that the judiciary also fails to give men and women relief in such marriages. The user mentioned that court cases drag for so long, that it demotivates other couples from stepping into it. Many other users came forward to narrate similar court cases of divorce which only shows that failure on the part of the judiciary.
Also because courts take huge amounts of time to dispose off a case. A friend's divorce took 11 years, that too after the 498 was quashed 7 years back

And also the laws discourage divorces, with cool off time and mediations

Another cause of the low divorce rate in India was said to be the fact that many women in India are still heavily dependent on their husbands financially, especially in rural areas. It’s a very practical reason that discourages women to break out of abusive relationships!
Also because most of the women in india are house wives and financially dependant of their husbands also in rural India women can't leave their husbands and live alone or with your parents for the sake of the society so living in abusive relationship is the only option https://t.co/tnER992st6

If we look around us, I am sure we can too point out many couples who are sticking with each other, just for the sake of it. In our relatives or even friends, we have come across marriages where the couple is frustrated with each other’s presence in life and yet will not consider divorce as an option, because, of course, “Naak Kat Jaegi”. Many women suffer relationships with abusive husbands because they have nowhere else to go, and cannot choose to shame their family. And well, the judiciary will always remain an adding factor!
