Harnaaz Sandhu Fatshamed For Her Opinion On The Hijab Row. Of Course, Attack A Woman’s Appearance When There’s No Valid Argument!
Growing up a female in a patriarchal society I have come to realise that the only way people know how to insult you is your appearance. Since I was a kid, I remember young boys and girls using my height, body or any other physical feature against me. And unfortunately, we aren’t in a position to even try and dismiss this as childish immaturity as people still use women’s bodies against them whenever they want to shut them down. Think again if you think I’m exaggerating because Harnaaz Sandhu had trolls telling her she’s overweight when she voiced her opinions on the Karnataka hijab row.

When Harnaaz Sandhu won the crown of Miss Universe in 2021, she was the nation’s pride and joy. However, we have clearly forgotten about all that as she is being relentlessly trolled for voicing her opposition to the hijab row. In an event recently, Harnaaz was asked about her opinions on the hijab row. She questioned why women get constantly targeted in society. She then further said a woman should be free to do whatever she pleases. She should be allowed to reach her potential and her progress shouldn’t be hindered. Harnaaz says that a woman should be allowed to take flight and her wings shouldn’t be cut.

Now, does what she said sound wrong to you? No. And it wouldn’t to anyone with a sense of morality and equality. But clearly, that’s not the case with most of our countrymen who trolled her for her very unproblematic opinion. They went as far as fat-shaming Harnaaz for voicing her opinion. And this wasn’t just limited to this video.
In the recent Lakme Fashion Week, Harnaaz was seen walking wearing a gorgeous orange dress with a slicked hairstyle. The trolls reached there too! Trying to put her down by saying how fat she allegedly looks.

Why is it that no matter what a woman achieves and says, her entire being is boiled down to her body and appearance? Moreover, using that as a way to counterpoint made her reflect poorly on the trolls rather than her. Because from my understanding, an intellectual argument comprises two open-minded people who can counter each other with valid points while simultaneously being open to listening to each other. If you don’t have the maturity to form smart arguments, maybe don’t try to “win” using cheap tactics which will make everyone question your own intellectual capacity.
