Songs Have Always Been The Brahmastra Of Birthday Boy Ranbir Kapoor’s Films. We Picked Our Favourites

Today is September 28 and that means it is Ranbir Kapoor’s happy birthday. So, on this special day, I’d like to declare something that may be an unpopular opinion – I believe Ranbir Kapoor is an extremely talented actor and he has proved this by taking risks in the kind of movies he does. I feel the need to say this out loud because, in recent times, he has been trashed by people a lot – whether it be about Shamshera or his relationship with Alia Bhatt. And amidst all the trashing, I believe that we often don’t see that his movies did not fail him because of his acting but rather because the story of the movie did not stick. Having said that, there is no denying that his movies have failed to impress audiences. But in all of this, one good thing has come out – movies of Ranbir Kapoor may have not won the audiences but his songs, uff, are to date magical. I mean, there is no denying that rather than his movies it is songs that are more popular.

Don’t believe me? Well, let me prove it to you. Starting off with his very first movie, his debut movie, Saawariya starring Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor as leads. The story and the magic of Sanjay Leela Bhansali might have not won, but the movie’s songs – ‘Saawariya’, ‘Jab Se Tere Naina’ (one of my all-time favourites), and ‘Masha-Allah’ – have the power to evoke romance like no other. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that it is the songs that saved the movie from being a total flop.

Now, since we’re on the subject of romance, let’s look at some of the romantic movies by Ranbir Kapoor that weren’t hit with the audiences but the songs for sure were. For instance, ‘Tera Hone Laga Hoon’ and ‘Tu Jaane Na’ from Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, ‘Aas Paas Khuda’ from Anjaana Anjaani, ‘Khuda Jaane’ and ‘Aahista Aahista’ from Bachna Ae Haseeno. Also ‘Iktara’ (I listen to this every time it rains) from Wake Up Sid – I know the coming-of-age movie did pretty good with the audiences but the song does deserve a special mention. Let’s face it, the song is way more popular than the movie and rightly so.

And that is the case with most of the movies by Ranbir Kapoor. Like in recent times, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s movie Tamasha helmed by Imtiaz Ali was one of my favourite movies of his, but sadly enough not for the audiences. However, songs like ‘Matargashti’, ‘Safarnama’, and ‘Agar Tum Saath Ho’ were super hits.

In fact, many of Ranbir Kapoor’s hit movies have a stronger fanbase for songs compared to the movies themselves. If I had to give you an example, then it would be the movie Ae Dil Hai Mushkil starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead. The movie did wonders at the box office but the songs – ‘Channa Mereya’, ‘Bulleya’, ‘The Breakup Song’, ‘Cutipie’, even the title track – stole the show and how.

And the same goes for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Kalki Koechlin as leads. Songs like ‘Badtameez Dil’, ‘Balam Pichkari’, ‘Kabira’, ‘Subhanallah’, Ghagra’, ‘Dilliwaali Girlfriend’, and others that came out in 2013 (feel old yet?) have made it to people’s playlists and stayed there to date. I mean, is a Holi party even complete without dancing to ‘Balam Pichkari’? I don’t think so.

One of his movies that I believe doesn’t get enough credit has to be hands down Barfi!. That movie was a masterpiece. And the credit for creating that masterpiece goes to Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who with their extraordinary and phenomenal performances elevated the story. And the movie’s songs – ‘Phir Le Aya Dil’, ‘Aashiyan’, and ‘Saawali Si Raat’ – are as exceptional as the movie itself.

And why just look back in the past? Let’s talk present and look at his most recent movie – Brahmāstra. The movie starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy, and many more. The movie that has blown the minds of people with its extraordinary visuals has also given audiences magical songs like ‘Rasiya’, ‘Deva Deva’, and of course ‘Kesariya’.

Now, before you all tell me that I skipped one of the main movies by Ranbir Kapoor, let me tell you I did not forget it, but I saved it for the last. Yes, I am talking about Rockstar. That movie was something else and its songs are from a different league in themselves. Everything about the songs is downright surreal – whether it is Mohit Chauhan’s voice (for most of the songs) or the lyrics or the musical compositions. ‘Kun Faya Kun’, ‘Tum Ho’, ‘Nadaan Parinde’, ‘Jo Bhi Main’, ‘Phir Se Ud Chala’, ‘Sada Haq’, ‘Aur Ho’ – the entire film score of this movie has my heart.

I know, I know, there are a lot of songs from a lot of movies I must have missed but in my defence, the list is a never-ending one. Ranbir Kapoor is a true gem and a very talented, versatile actor who is not afraid of taking risks – his movies are proof of that. And whether you agree with me or not, you cannot deny the fact that it is his movies that have given us songs that do justice to most of our moods and situations (whether it is relationship situations or otherwise).

And today, on September 28, his birthday, I’d like to say thank you to Ranbir Kapoor. Thank you for giving us movies that were different from what we’re used to, giving us characters that reflect people we see in the real world – the toxic and the not-so-toxic, and giving us songs that have the power to make us happy and sad, laugh and cry. Thank you for being as real and as honest as possible with your craft. Happy Birthday.
