From Kristen Stewart’s Shorts To Will Smith Punching Chris Rock, Here’s How Twitter Reacted To The Bizarre Oscars 2022
The 94th Academy Awards are perhaps the most bizarre and shocking edition of the Oscars that at least I have watched. Already swimming in controversy for some of its questionable decisions, like awarding 8 categories in a pre-taped show, and a very flow-less ceremony, there’s a lot that happened that made Twitter enter the speed force and react at the speed of lightning with their tweets! (#IYKYK) But let’s talk about creating history, and I don’t mean Will Smith punching Chris Rock. Nope. Jane Campion just won the Oscar for Best Director for her neo-western The Power Of The Dog. This is one historic win, as she becomes only the third woman to win a Best Director Oscar in the 94-year history of the Academy. There’s also the Best Picture win for CODA, Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur, Ariana DeBose making history for queer people of colour, and the stage reunions of beloved classics like The Godfather and Pulp Fiction.
Needless to say, Twitter had feelings galore about it. Here are some of the best reactions to the Oscars 2022!
When they talked about Kristen Stewart on the Oscars red carpet in the most incredible outfit!
Kristen Stewart, also breaking some #Oscar red carpet rules. No mermaid dresses! No princess frocks! It's about time. pic.twitter.com/fllMPiaqbz

Timothée Chalamet is shirtless and Kristen Stewart is wearing shorts 🙏🏼 #Oscars pic.twitter.com/5nr3e30IPJ

Kristen Stewart immediately changed out of heels and into flats the second she got off the red carpet. Amen, girl. #Oscars pic.twitter.com/8my10dsDAb

Did Kristen Stewart win for best live-action shorts? #Oscars

Did you guys also notice how most of the gowns this evening were similar in this department?
My dad just said the double stick tape tonight should win all of the awards. I’m so proud. #Oscars #AcademyAward #Boobs #AllTheBoobs

There was a lot of anger about the 8 Oscar categories that were bumped off the main telecast to make it a shorter, more palatable Oscars in a desperate bid to boost viewership. And according to some tweets, it didn’t help. It just left people pissed.
The #Oscars awarding eight categories off the air to make room for red-carpet blather feels just as disrespectful to those nominees as we knew it would. Low point for the ceremony, right off the bat.

In all the time they're wasting with these inane #Oscar pre-show gags and bits and regular-person interactions that add nothing, they could be showing us those eight crucial categories they're not airing during the live broadcast.

Just saying there are a LOT of living Bond leading ladies who could have introduced this bit. #Oscars

The Oscars fan favourite was another gimmick that got massive taunts, particularly when the scene of The Flash entering the Speed Force in Zack Snyder’s Justice League won the vote. The jibes cut through like lightning!
the #Oscars honoring "The Flash Enters the Speed Force in Zack Snyder's Justice League" is the embarrassing shit we're all here for
— Sam Adams (@SamuelAAdams) March 28, 2022
We don't talk about Bruno. We do, however, talk about The Flash entering the Speed Force.

Look at this well-edited Bond montage. Editing sure is a pretty good skill, huh? Like one worthy of happening during the main show, right? RIGHT? #Oscars

I personally think all the moments involving CODA wins were very heartwarming, but the best was when Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung used sign language to signal Troy Kotsur’s win as Best Supporting Actor!
OMG! Did she SIGN @TroyKotsur’s name and now everyone is doing the sign for applause!!! 😭❤️
The ugly cry. I am in the midst of the UGLIEST of UGLY cries!!! 😩#Oscars #CODA

A lot about the Oscars did feel like a joke this year, and this Will Smith – Chris Rock moment was the Punch line.
i actually did have "Will Smith furiously smacks the shit out of Chris Rock" on my #Oscars bingo card and am now incredibly rich

The In Memoriam section missed out on a couple of legends like Lata Mangeshkar and Dilip Kumar. But what was also rather different was the choice of some upbeat music to replace the usual soulful lament.
I was actually expecting #LataMangeshkar to be mentioned in the #Oscars In Memoriam. But well…

this is definitely the most insane oscars i have ever witnessed without question

Between Jane Campion's "Venus, Serena, you don’t play against the men” speech and Will Smith's “Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family” #Oscars speech justifying his assault, no one has been through it more than the Williams sisters this awards season

When Lady Gaga and Liza Minnelli presented the Best Picture Oscar together… it was adorable!
The class, kindness and glowing #respect Lady Gaga showed toward Liza Minnelli made up for a lot about this nutty evening, and I promise you I will have a soft spot for Gaga for the rest of my life.

CODA and The Power Of The Dog were both frontrunners for the Best Picture Oscar, and for CODA to make history like that…
— Erik Anderson (@awards_watch) March 28, 2022
It's genuinely sad how most recent Oscars are remembered for the messiest bits of the ceremony (the La La Land/Moonlight mixup, moving Best Actor to the end only for Chadwick to not win, Will Smith punching Chris Rock) and not the sweeping emotion or heartfelt speeches

My favourite tweet remains….
our current crop of celebrities just aren’t cutting it. shein oscars
— oatmeal influencer (@acechhh) March 27, 2022
Well, that was an evening to remember… for some good reasons, but mostly for some very wrong reasons too. Sigh!
