Huma Qureshi’s Take On Pay Parity In Entertainment Industry Is Food For Thought

If there’s anyone who has proved their mettle as an actor, it’s Huma Qureshi. Time and again, the actress has won us over with her acting skills and her ability to bring her character to life. But for a while, the actress was missing from our screens and now, she’s back with back-to-back hits. From films to web series, Huma has forayed into all sectors and won us over. And after her qawwali number in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest hit, Gangubai Kathiawadi starring Alia Bhatt, we can’t help but want more of Huma Qureshi. In a recent interview, the actress opened up about pay parity, doing female-centric films and her upcoming film Double XL.

Discussing pay parity in the entertainment industry in a conversation with ETimes, Huma Qureshi said that if a woman asks for what she deserves, it’s probably because she deserves it while adding that a woman deserves what she’s asking for. She went on to point out the a man doesn’t need to prove his acting skills by doing a male-centric film but a woman has to. “My point is that a man doesn’t have to prove himself by doing a male-centric film, but sometimes a female has to prove it by doing a female-centric film and say that this is the audience that she has pulled in,” said the Mithya actress.

Speaking further about the change she wants to bring as a woman, Huma said that she wants to bring a positive change and impact in terms of body positivity. She said that she wishes to make every woman love her body while pointing out that women are ‘much more beautiful and complex’ but they’re just judged by their weight. She further added that this is the message that she hopes to convert in her upcoming film Double XL which also stars Sonakshi Sinha.

Speaking about her favourite on-screen character, Huma Qureshi said that she has played several strong female characters while adding that it’s difficult to come across well-written female characters as our society doesn’t like strong women. Pointing out that society isn’t a fan of women who are vocal and opinionated, the actress said that the same reflects in the films and web series as well but times are now changing and female-centric roles are in demand now. She went on to share that the character of Rani Bharti from Maharani is a character that holds a special place in her heart as she is an uneducated woman who went on to become the Chief Minister of Bihar.

Huma Qureshi also opened up about being a part of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi with her cameo in the song ‘Shikayat’. She said that it feels surreal that the song is receiving so much ‘love and adulation’. She also spoke about the ‘overwhelming’ response to her Zee5 series Mithya.
