10 Romance Animes That Should Be On Your Anime List To Binge Next

If you know me even a little, one of the first things that I make pretty obvious is that I am super into anime. While it hasn’t been long since I started watching anime, I have consumed an ungodly amount of content with no remorse. So, when Valentine’s week rolled around this year, how do you assume I spent it? That is correct, by binging on romance animes will give me higher romantic standards than the ones I already have. So I am here to further the weeb agenda and present a list of romance animes I feel like everyone should watch,

1. Howl’s Moving Castle (Hauru No Ugoku Shiro)

Other than the classic Ghibli aesthetic which we all know and love, this movie is simply beautiful within its plot and characters. The story revolves around Sophie Hatter a young woman who gets cursed to turn into a 90-year-old woman. Looking to break the curse, she goes to the countryside where she ends up at the legendary wizard, Howl Pendragon’s moving castle. It is a beautiful story that gives a commentary on war as it is set in a kingdom where magic and technology co-exist against the backdrop of war. If you are someone who enjoys tales of fantasy and romance with some wholesomeness, please watch this one!

2. Given (Givun)

Given I think is one of the first BL animes I watched. And what a watch indeed! Firstly, the anime is heavily based on music. The songs hold deep meaning, especially when you understand the backstory and the emotions of the characters. The plot revolves around a band with which the anime shares a name. It explores the relationship between lead singer Mafuyu Sato and guitarist Ritsuka Uenoyama; however, it also focuses on their individual developments as the story progresses and not just their relationship. It also follows bassist Haruki Nakayama and drummer Akihiko Kaji and their relationship as well.

What I personally love about Given is how organic all the relationships feel. None of the characters coming together feels forced. Moreover, rather than portraying a happily ever after, the story shows the conflicts personal feelings can bring between two people.

3. Horimiya

I watched Horimiya while I was watching the HXH Chimera arc (IYKYK). And trust me, the wholesomeness this adorable rom-com gave me helped with all the angst HXH was throwing at me (all about balance).
Anyway, Horimiya is about the popular Kyouko Hori and the loner Izumi Miyamura. While there are a lot of preconceived notions about Miyamura, there is a lot more to him than what he lets on. The way their relationship develops perfectly encompasses the innocence of young love. This high school romance will have your heart if you’re into shows with wholesome characters and simple yet deep storylines. Moreover, the story also shows the other conflicts that many teens go through via their amazingly written side characters. It is a true rom-com and something every cheesy romantic (like me) should watch.

4. Maid Sama! (Kaichō Wa Meido-Sama!)

So, this one might not be for everyone but I did enjoy the playfulness of it. The story is about Misaki Ayuzawa who is the first female student council president of Seika High. She is seen as a tough-as-nails, boy hating girl by the boys of her school. However, her main goal is to make the school a safer place for female students considering that Seika High was an all-boys school that has recently gone co-ed and the female population is pretty low. Contrary to her reputation, she secretly works at a maid cafe to support her family. But one day her secret is found out by the popular boy in her school, Takumi Usui.

Now many might see this as a very typical high school romance which it kinda is. However, the way Usui keeps teasing Ayuzawa while also being a source of constant support for her is truly endearing and fun to watch. Also makes for a lot of awww-worthy moments.

5. Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku (Wotaku Ni Koi Wa Muzukashii)

If high school romances aren’t your thing, worry not! Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku revolves around Narumi Momose and Hirotaka Nifuji who are middle school friends and now co-workers. The story highlights them bonding over their shared interest of being otakus. Their relationship navigates adult relationships in the most hilariously awkward way possible.

6. Doukyuusei

One more BL coming at you! This one’s a movie though. The story is about two high school classmates: free-spirited band member Hikaru Kusakabe and straight-A, honour student Rihito Sajou. When Kusakabe watches Sajou struggling to get their class’s song right for an upcoming chorus festival, he offers to help him learn. Despite their opposite personalities, they grow closer. Watch this one for the AMAZING art style and realistic exploration of their sexuality by 2 high schoolers.

7. Bloom Into You (Yagate Kimi Ni Naru)

Okay so here is a beautiful yuri anime. Yuu Koito is unsure of how to turn down a suitor. That’s when she sees student council president Touko Nanami turn down someone very maturely. That’s when Koito asks Nanami to help her do the same and the story between the two begins.

8. Your Name (Kimi No Na Wa)

This one was an anime movie I watched after my breakup and the way I sobbed, I can’t! The story revolves around Mitsuha Miyamizu and Taki Tachibana. The two of them keep finding themselves waking up in each other’s bodies and living each other’s lives. In the pursuit of trying to understand this phenomenon, they start looking for each other. Other than the heart-shattering story, please watch this for the beautiful visuals and dreamy art.

9. Say “I Love You.” (Sukitte Ii Na Yo)

After a particularly traumatic incident with her former friends, Mei Tachibana has chosen to remain a loner and stay friend-less. However, her foundation of introversion is shaken when popular boy Yamato Kurosawa takes a sudden interest in her. The story revolves around Mei slowly opening up to Yamato and understanding the true meaning of the words “I love you.” My cheesy romantic heart cannot deal!

10. Fruits Basket (Furūtsu Basuketto)

This one is fantastical in nature. The plot follows high schooler Tohru Honda and her discovering the mysterious Sohma clan. However, the clan has a secret that has marred the clan’s history in trauma, heartbreak, isolation, ostracization, fear, and pain. However, Tohru could be the key to changing the Sohma clan.

While this list has really tempted me into rewatching all of these, my anime list suggests I have a lot of new ones to catch up on. However, that isn’t the case with you guys! Cosy up and binge these (sorta) light-hearted romances and raise your romantic standards in the process, just like I have.
