The much-needed inclusivity in job opportunities is slowly happening in the country. It should always count as a moment of pride and happiness for the citizens. On Monday, one such good news made headlines when Kerala got its first transgender lawyer, Padma Lakshmi. The news was hailed by people across the country and many congratulatory messages poured in for the first transgender lawyer. Among, the 1500 students who got their bar council certificate, Padma Lakshmi became the first transperson to receive it.
Padma Lakshmi, Kerala’s first transgender lawyer hails from Edappally in Kochi. It was always her dream to become a lawyer so that she could fight the injustices and discrimination that still prevail in society, Padma Lakshmi said in a recent media interaction. She earned her degree in law from Ernakulam Government Law College and on Sunday, March 19, she officially received her Kerala Bar Council certificate in a ceremony with 1500 other candidates.

The Kerala Law minister congratulated the state’s first trans lawyer and wrote words of praise for her. He acknowledged the difficulties that might have come along Padma Lakshmi’s way yet how she overcame all the obstacles to be where she is today.

India had got its first transgender judge in 2017 when Joyita Monday took the responsibility of this position in Lok Adalalat of Islampur, a place in West Bengal. Since then India has seen representation from this community in the judiciary system. And now, even Kerala has got finally seen one.
It is good to see this representation and inclusivity, especially in the area of giving equal job opportunities. This will also encourage more and more people from the same community to work towards the goal and achieve their dreams because nothing is impossible!
