Shaadi.com May Venture Into Matchmaking For LGBTQ+ Community, Twitter Asks ‘Are We Gonna Pretend Marry?’

As a heterosexual person, I believe I’m in a much more privileged place. I can openly date and marry without much resistance from society but the same does not apply to the LGBTQ+ community. Our society is as intolerant as it can get when it comes to the members of the LGBTQ+ community. With no laws in their favour, marriage is not something that they can talk about or dream of. While the Indian legal system did decriminalise homosexuality, it still does not recognise gay marriages or any other marriages apart from one between a man and a woman. While this may not change anytime soon, matchmaking might soon become easier for the LGBTQ+ community as Shaadi.com has hinted that they may venture into the sector.

Yes, you read that right. Speaking to Business Insider, Shaadi.com’s founder and chief executive Anupam Mittal shared that the matchmaking platform is looking forward to venturing into matchmaking for the LGBTQ+ community. Mittal shared that Shaadi.com sees itself as a ‘platform for companionship and matchmaking’ while adding that it could mean ‘different markets, different regions, different countries, different sexes’. He further added the matchmaking platform does not have a problem with that as it will allow them to expand significantly in terms of matchmaking.

Well, cheers to Shaadi.com for being inclusive. We’re truly happy that the LGBTQ+ community will finally have a chance at something more than just dating. But Twitter seems to be divided about the idea. As soon as the news of Shaadi.com venturing into matchmaking for the LGBTQ+ community made it to Twitter, the microblogging platform was flooded with tweets that left us with a lot to think about. While we saw some truly intolerant comments, we also came across several questions which are food for thought.

I suppose we should also address the elephant in the room. How will this help if gay marriages are not legalised in India?
