Telangana’s First Gay Wedding: Same-Sex Couple Says ‘I Do’ In A Dreamy Ceremony In Hyderabad

Ever since the beginning of 2021, we’ve seen some beautiful weddings (celeb and otherwise). Though we love celeb weddings, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen some really unique and heartwarming wedding stories. It’s so easy for all heterosexual couples to just tie the knot as and when they want. Sadly, the same cannot be said for all same-sex couples across India. Same-sex marriages are not legally recognized in India. But this adorable gay couple did not let this hold them back from having their dream wedding.

Supriyo Chakraborty and Abhay Dang tied the knot and made their relationship of 8 years official in Hyderabad. The lovebirds walked down the aisle in matching white tuxedos and exchanged vows in what they called a ‘promising ceremony’. And that’s not all, this adorable same-sex couple went all out and had a traditional wedding with a mix of Bengali and Punjabi traditions as well. This wedding is the first one of its kind in Telangana. And it seems like this couple is not only winning our hearts but also the internet today!

Several pictures from this gay couple’s super-duper adorable wedding ceremony have taken over Instagram and it’s making us swoon. Since the duo could not legally register the wedding (no thanks to the laws in our country) this gave them all the more reasons to celebrate their union with a traditional ceremony. Supriyo and Abhay’s wedding was attended by a total of 60 people including their family, close friends as well as members of the LGBTQ+ community. According to media reports, their ceremony was officiated by their close friend and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Sophia David.

While this unique same-sex couple’s wedding was a mix of Bengali and Punjabi rituals, it did not involve any marital rituals and the two decided to call each other ‘soulmates’. Speaking about the ceremony, Supriyo shared that their wedding was aimed at normalising gay couples and relationships in India and inspiring those in the closet to come out. He further shared that they had a Mehendi and Sangeet ceremony. Supriyo added that Abhay is Punjabi and he is Bengali and this is why they mixed all rituals to ‘put in all the essence possible’.

“Our parents weren’t initially the most supportive. However, they also didn’t disapprove of it either. They decided to give us and themselves a good amount of time to introspect and come to a better conclusion. Now, we have their acceptance,” he further added,

India and homosexuality do not really go hand in hand but it is important to understand that customs, traditions and laws need to change or rather ‘evolve’ with time. Over the years, we’ve not only seen same-sex couples struggle with laws and society but also take a strong stand against such norms and fight for their rights along with the rest of the LGBTQ+ community. The Supreme Court’s decision to decriminalise homosexuality was the first win for the gay community and to quote the judge – ‘pave the way for a better future’. While same-sex marriages are yet to gain legal and social acceptance in society, this couple’s move to normalising it is something we’re welcoming with an open heart. And we’re so proud of Supriyo and Abhay!

And on that note, congratulations for the new beginning, guys!
