5 People Who Should Have Spoken Up About The Wrestlers’ Protest But Haven’t

Is it so difficult to support the truth?
5 People Who Should Have Spoken Up About The Wrestlers’ Protest But Haven’t

Appaling pictures and videos of our national wrestlers are currently doing rounds on social media. The continuous protests by the wrestlers against the WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh seem to have no end, and the protestors are standing strong in the face of every atrocity by the authorities. Many celebrities and athletes have come out in support of the wrestlers. However, there are many other personalities who hold the responsibility and accountability to speak on the sensitive issue and every ill-treatment that the wrestlers are being subjected to but still, have not uttered a single word!

Prime Minister

Our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always praised Indian athletes for their achievements. His words of encouragement have always inspired the athletes to make the country proud on a global level. It’s unfortunate that the PM has not expressed any opinion on the demeaning state of our national wrestlers.

Aamir Khan

Politician and wrestler Babita Phogat’s father Mahavir Singh Phogat had once stated that he looked forward to actor Aamir Khan’s statement on the matter, and was indifferent towards any other celebrity speaking up. However, till now Aamir Khan has not given any statement. He has also played Mahavir Phogat’s character in Dangal and was a host for a show like Satyamev Jayate. Shouldn’t he be saying something?

Smriti Irani

Former actress, and currently holding the office of Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani still refrains from speaking on wrestlers’ protests. As a spokesperson for women, it’s her responsibility to comment on the matter which involves sexual harassment allegations against the WFI chief. The distressing images of female wrestlers being manhandled by the police should have been reason enough for Smriti Irani to come out in support of them.

Sportsmen, Especially Cricketers

No other sport in India is given as much respect and recognition as Cricket. Many well-known cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni continue to choose silence over the matter instead of supporting the wrestlers. These cricketers have a strong influence on society and hold accountability towards their sports federation too! The BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had refused to comment on the matter because he did not have enough knowledge about it. Okay!

Bollywood Celebrities

Priyanka Chopra has always voiced her opinion on international issues, however, it’s sad that she continues to turn a blind eye to the matters of her own country. She has also played the role of Mary Kom, in the boxer’s biopic, shouldn’t she post at least an IG story to acknowledge the wrestlers’ protest? Deepika Padukone showed her solidarity with the students during the JNU protest, why isn’t she saying anything, also keeping in mind the fact that comes from a family of athletes? Many actresses who have played the role of athletes on screen should come out to support the wrestlers but they choose not to!
