Besharam Rang Row: Smriti Irani Trolled For Old Saffron Bikini Video

The controversy surrounding the ‘Besharam Rang’ song from Pathaan does not seem to be dying down. If anything, fuel is being added to this already raging fire every passing hour. While internet users are incessantly trolling Deepika Padukone for wearing a saffron-coloured bikini, a video of Union Minister Smriti Irani wearing an orange bikini during Miss India 1998 pageant has surfaced online as well.

It all started with a political connotation at the Kolkata International Film Festival 2022 where Arijit Singh was asked to sing his favourite song and he crooned two lines of the song, ‘Rang De Tu Mohe Gerua’. This led to BJP’s Amit Malviya tweeting that the future of Bengal is saffron.

In turn, Trinamool Congress leader Riju Dutta tweeted a video of Union Minister Smriti Irani walking the ramp wearing a saffron bikini during Miss India 1998 swim round. He captioned the video by writing, “Rang De Tu Mohe Gerua.”

This tweet did not sit well with BJP MP Locket Chatterjee who went on to label the TMC leader as ‘misogynistic’.

Dutta also hit back by calling the hypocrisy of the Central party by saying that they have defended Bilkis Bano’s rapists by calling them ‘sanskari brahmins’.

It is really sad that women are been demeaned and trolled in this controversy. Since when did what a woman wears became a national issue? Since when did a woman’s clothes become the talking point for the nation from the perspective of religion?

Bringing up Smriti Irani’s old video is proof that people do not want to move past this issue. They want to make this ‘Besharam Rang’ controversy a hot topic of conversation, and they have no qualms in raising questions about a woman’s dignity in doing so. That is how low Indian society has stooped today. It is absolutely shameful.

Pathaan is an action thriller starring Deepika Padukone, Shah Rukh Khan and John Abraham in the lead roles. The movie will release in theatres on January 25, 2023.
