Over the past years, cases of violence against women have seen a sharp rise in the country and it is a topic of concern for all of us. Relevant and strong steps to bring an end to such cases are the need of the hour. Recently, the very first study on Gender-based violence (GBV) in the country has revealed some shocking findings that highlight the rising number of deaths in women due to GBV. It is a distressing study that only shows how much immediate attention this issue faced by a significant number of women needs rn!

It was a joint study conducted by Vital Strategies’ initiative Data For Health and the KEM Hospital, Parel. It was authorised by Mumbai’s Women and Child Department (WCD). The aim of the study was to have a clear understanding of what’s the ground status of women being affected by Gender-based violence so as to launch initiatives accordingly to help them. As per the finding of the study, some 840 unnatural deaths were reported in women and out of this, 181 were cases of Gender-Based violence. Segregating these 181 cases further, the percentage was the same for suicides and accidents at 47% whereas 10% of cases were of homicide. Another shocking aspect was that 75% of women were in the age group of 15-44. The department has decided to form a committee headed by the KEM hospital, and it will be responsible for helping women facing GBV cases with relevant policies, as per the news.

The report speaks for itself. Many women who died unnatural deaths had a long history of gender-based violence by their husbands, partners or close relatives. Most of the unnatural, sudden deaths of women were reported as “Accidental deaths” clearly ignoring the atrocities faced by them. As per the news, the HOD also accepted that the study has highlighted the need to thoroughly investigate such cases.
