A Tearful Sania Mirza Bids Farewell To Her Grand Slam Career At Australian Open 2023

The conversation about tennis is incomplete without mentioning Sania Mirza and her six Grand Slam wins. She won the first Grand Slam in Melbourne in 2009 and played her last on the same court on January 27, 2023.  Tennis fans were heartbroken when she announced her retirement as they were not yet done seeing her gameplay. Sania Mirza gave an emotional speech after she and her partner, Rohan Bopanna, lost the Australian Open 2023. She bid her fans a tearful adieu and broke down as she remembered her first-ever game at Melbourne.

The official Twitter handle of the Australian Open shared the video as Sania Mirza was bowing out of her Grand Slams career. She said that she is going to play some more games but her journey as a professional tennis player started in Melbourne. Sania had tears in her eyes as she remembered the games she had played in the same court where she was standing and delivering her last speech.

Sania Mirza continued and said that it all started in 2005 in Melbourne when she played against Serena Williams as an 18-year-old. She concluded her speech and said that she could not think of a better arena than Lod Raver to finish her career at. She also thanked her fans for making her feel at home.

Of the six Grand Slams doubles that the 36-year-old star player has won, three were from the mixed tournament. In the final Grand Slam of her career, Sania and Rohan Bopanna lost against Brazil’s Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos. She has 43 doubles titles to her name in her glorious career so far. She will play one final match, the WTA 1000 tournament, in Dubai before she retires.
