‘Mind The Malhotras’ Season 2 Review: The Cute Malhotra Family Is Chaotic But Relatable, Will Remind You Of Old Sitcoms

You know, I used to love watching TV shows when I was a kid because I am an introvert since childhood and I hated stepping outside my house, but most importantly, I used to love the vibes of the old sitcoms. I know it is making you nostalgic right now about shows like Office Office, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Yes Boss, and the list goes on. But I have good news for you, Amazon Prime Video’s Mind The Malhotras Season 2 will take you on a trip down memory lane with its modern take on the old sitcoms. And if you are not convinced yet, let me tell you why you should binge-watch this comedy-drama starring Mini Mathur, Cyrus Sahukar, Sushmita Mukherjee, Anandita Pagnis, Nikki Sharma, Jason D’souza, Rahul Verma, Sameer Kochhar, Denzil Smith, and Dalip Tahil among others. This series, which is helmed by Sahil Sangha and written by Sahil Sangha and Karan Sharma, will definitely make you roll on the floor laughing or you can say #ROFL.

The first season of Mind The Malhotras gave the audience a peep into the midlife marital crisis of Rishabh Malhotra, played by Cyrus Sahukar, and Shefali Malhotra, played by Mini Mathur, which continues in season 2 as well, but with new and messier drama, and it is absolutely fun and entertaining to watch. While Shefali runs the race for followers as an online Chef, aka Shef the Chef, Rishabh is all engrossed in his merger that will make him a millionaire (they both have such big dreams). Due to marital and family tensions, the couple seeks therapy again without telling each other but they are not good at keeping secrets. As Rishabh is preparing for the merger of his ball bearings company with a Japanese firm and neglects his responsibilities as a husband and a father, Shefali’s college boyfriend, also called Rishabh but with a Jain (Sameer Kochhar) turns up and who is nothing but a perfect man. Shef, who knows about her husband’s insecurities, tries to make him jealous by hanging out with his ex-boyfriend.

Their kids – the teenage twins – padhaku Dia (Nikki Sharma), who wants to get out of her madhouse, and the rising social media star, Jia (Anandita Pagnis), who is a bit confused about her sexuality, and last but definitely not the least, the young environmental activist Yohan (Jason D’Souza), who only wants to save this planet and wants to impress his crush, Tiara. I get that a lot of people won’t relate to this family’s first-world problems because some people think that ‘rich people’s problems’ are not entertaining and I totally agree with it. I mean, my parents will never go to therapy and I don’t think anyone will treat their helper like the Malhotras treat Zorawar/Zoru (Rahul Verma). Cyrus Sahukar’s characters can be heard saying that Zoru is more important to him than his wife but their bromance is actually kind of cute.

VERDICT

The Indian version of the Israeli show La Familia seems flat at the beginning but as we meet all the family members and neighbours, it really starts making sense all of a sudden and it just keeps getting entertaining. Mind The Malhotras 2 quite effortlessly highlights issues like mental health, couple therapy, the dilemma of career-oriented women, and LGBTQIA+ relationships, but the makers always took the easy way out while finding the solutions to the problems, maybe they didn’t really want to drag the whole topic but a little mehnat would have been nice, to be honest.

Cyrus Sahukar as Rishabh Malhotra is like every Indian man but with fewer anger issues. Mini Mathur as Shefali Malhotra steals the show with her girl boss persona. especially when Dr. Gulfam tells her that she should focus on her family after she had to delete her Youtube channel. I loved how she snaps at him and explains that women are more than just housewives and their dreams matter.

All and all, Mind The Malhotras Season 2 feels like a modern version of your favourite old sitcoms, just add laughing background noise and it will be perfect. The chaotic Malhotra family is imperfectly perfect and #relatable (If you know you know).

Well, I am very excited about the third season of the show because I really want to know who is pregnant. I mean, is it Jia, the teenager who only knows how to gain followers on social media, is it Shefali, a mother of three who is all set to open her new cafe, or is it Rishabh’s mother Sunita Malhotra, who is in a casual-serious relationship with Roshan. Hmm, this is getting really interesting now, to be honest!
