‘Forensic’ Review: Convincing Characters, Unpredictable Plot-Twist And Logical Explanations Make This One A Mindful Murder-Thriller

The entertainment industry’s tryst with thrillers and murder mysteries is getting deeper with each passing project. As I have mentioned in my previous articles, I am an avid reader and have grown up reading Agatha Christie and Sidney Sheldon. So, when it comes to thrillers, not just reading but also watching them, my standards are sky-high. And well, in terms of cinematic thriller projects, I saw Forensic, the Vikrant Massey, Radhika Apte and Prachi Desai starrer. The movie is directed by Vishal Furia and is available for streaming on Zee 5. It is the Hindi language adaptation of the Malayalam film of the same name. If you are contemplating whether you should watch it or not, read this review first and then decide.

Plot Of Forensic

A serial killer is on the loose, going about kidnapping and murdering 10-year-old girls on their birthdays in the chilling hill station of Mussoorie. Radhika Apte AKA Megha is the police officer who is assigned to the case and Vikrant Massey is the best forensic expert in the field. They team up to catch the murderer while trying to keep personal and professional boundaries in check. (There’s some history between the two, of course!)

While on their hunt to find the killer, the evidence suggests that maybe the killer is a 10-year-old kid. Now, this shocks the police department and the media spreads this news like wildfire throughout the entire Mussoorie. Parents are scared for the lives of their children and stop sending them to school or parks. Police catch hold of an unruly-looking boy who confesses that it is a young girl who is making him dump bodies all over the hill station but does not remember what she looks like or the instructions she gave.

A common thing in all the murders that took place was that the victims were all girls and they were all killed on their birthdays. Things take a turn for the worse when Megha’s niece becomes a prime suspect in the case as she is seen taking care of one of the dead bodies. Megha and Johnny are suspended while the former’s niece also disappears making Megha a liability to the case.

There’s also Prachi Desai AKA DR Ranjana in the film who essays the role of a child psychiatrist and who is also Megha’s niece’s therapist. Her consultation is also taken in to understand the killer’s psyche. But instead of helping with the case, Dr Ranjana has her own agenda which she fulfils by manipulating her underage patients at the snap of her fingers. I did a double-take when I saw this part! I wondered how psychosis and hypnosis came to be a part of the plot. But let’s move the cast of the movie.

Cast Of Forensic

Speaking of the cast, Vikrant Massey does look good as Johnny Khanna. He is shown to have the habit of talking to himself while trying to work by making a parody of the age-old rhyme, “Johnny Johnny, yes papa”, which did feel weird, to be honest! Radhika Apte as Megha is fearless, strong and the logical voice of the film whereas Prachi Desai is the “sweet and soft-spoken” Dr Ranjana. Vindu Dara Singh plays a constable who also tries to keep light and fun with his humour. But guess what surprised me the most about the cast? Johnny’s mentor turns out to be none other the Dr Salunke from CID! How fitting was that!

Verdict

What I really enjoyed about the film was that logical explanation that was given for each deduction that was made. All the suspects were caught based on forensic evidence and nothing was left without an explanation. Each detail pertaining to the murders was justified when police narrowed down their suspects. The makers stuck true to the name of the film!

Since the plot is so heavy, Johnny keeps it light throughout by making jokes and addressing Radhika as ‘darling’. The plot is set in the hilly region which gives a cosy vibe despite it being a murder thriller. The cast does not appear to be a great fit but as you watch the film, the actors mould into their roles better. But I have to tell you that I was not a fan of Vikrant-Radhika’s chemistry. Half the time their interaction made me wonder what is going on here? But I really liked them as individual characters. Together, they look like a weird concoction that did not vibe with each other.

The twist was a good one. I’ll give them that. When it was revealed who the killer is, I really went like “WHATTTT”! I did not expect nor suspect that this person would be the killer so the makers deliver on that part. The build-up to the climax was also quite anticipating. The needle of suspicion jumping from person to person kept the plot going and also kept me on the edge of my seat.

So, all-in-all, it is a good one-time watch! Plus, it is a two-hour film so you can definitely binge on it this weekend.

Rating – 3/5
