Who Is Muskan, The Hijab-Clad Girl Who Confronted The Slogan-Shouting Anti-Hijab Mob In Karnataka?

The Hijab ban controversy has been going on in Karnataka for quite a long time now. It started in January when an educational institute in Udipi did not allow some female students to enter the classroom as they were wearing hijabs. Soon after, the Muslim students protested against the hijab ban in Udupi’s Pre-University College and filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court regarding this matter. Amid the ongoing controversy, a video surfaced online where a mob of students stopped and even heckled a Muslim student named Muskan when she was entering the college because she was wearing a burqa.

The Karnataka hijab controversy is getting more and more serious. While the Muslim students are protesting against the ban of hijab and burqa, many students are protesting against them wearing saffron shawls. In the middle of this whole controversy, a video went viral on social media platforms that show a Muslim girl wearing a burqa being heckled by a group of boys as she is entering college, the boys can be heard yelling slogans in the video. According to media reports, the Muslim girl named Muskan arrived at PES College to submit an assignment when a group of students started chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’. In a bid to counter them, Muskan fearlessly raised her hand and yelled ‘Allahu Akbar’ before the college staff rushed to escort her inside.

Recently, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi informed in a tweet that he has spoken to Muskan and her family, he praised her for taking a stand for her education while exercising freedom of choice and freedom. “Spoke to Muskan & her family on call. Prayed for her to remain steadfast in her commitment to education while also exercising her freedom of religion & choice. I conveyed that her act of fearlessness has become a source of courage for us all 1/n,” he wrote.

Talking about the incident, Muskan said that she was not worried about facing the group alone and she will keep fighting for her rights. She mentioned that only 10 per cent of the men in the group were from her college and the rest were outsiders. Furthermore, she said that education is her priority and they (anti-hijab goons) are trying to ruin it. “The hijab is a part of us. The principal never said anything. Outsiders have started this. The principal has advised us not to carry the burqa. We will continue to protest for the hijab. It is just a part of being a Muslim girl…” she said in an interview. Many celebrities including Richa Chadha, Swara Bhasker, Kamal Haasan, Aly Goni showed their support to the Muslim girl and slammed the mob.
