“Are Hindus The Only Betis Of India?”, Muslim Students On Karnataka Hijab Row Amid Ongoing High Court Hearing

The current hot debate in India is the Karnataka college hijab ban. In a shocking event, several educational institutes in Karnataka banned Muslim students from wearing hijabs on campus citing ‘social harmony’. Amid the hijab row, a petition has been filed in the High Court challenging the ban as it violates the fundamental rights of the students. The petition is currently being heard by the court. On the other hand, a massive protest broke out amid the student groups who favour the hijab ban and those who don’t. As the protest continues to intensify, students have spoken to the media and questioned the government.

In a conversation with the media, a Muslim student slammed the government for violating their right to education while reminding them of the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign. Pointing out that they have been wearing hijabs since their childhood and they were never barred from wearing them from the beginning of their college, a student questioned the government and the campaign. “They talk about ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’, are they (Hindus) the only betis? Aren’t we the betis? We are the daughters of the country. Why suddenly does the government have a problem with the hijab? I have been wearing it for three years here now, why is it a problem now?” said the student as quoted by NDTV.

Speaking about the students in saffron scarves protesting against the Muslim students, another student accused them of trying to get the Muslim girls thrown out of the college. The student further questioned why they should have to pick between their right to education and the right to practice their faith. Another student raised questions on the hijab ban and asked why it has suddenly become an issue just two months before college is about to end. She further added that they are not going to leave the hijab or their education. She also pointed out that the country may have gotten freedom 75 years ago, but the women are still not free.

Talking about the student wearing saffron, the students shared that they have no problems with students wearing saffron but added that hijab is mandatory for them and that they have been wearing it since childhood but that’s not the case with the Hindu students.

I’ve had it with these extremists dictating how women especially Muslim women should and should not dress.
