Who Is Giorgia Meloni? Everything To Know About Italy’s First Female Far-Right Prime Minister

This year, Italy’s general election was historic. Why? Because Giorgia Meloni, leader of the Brothers of Italy, emerged victorious and became the first female prime minister.  Not just that but she will also be leading the most far-right government since the fascist era of Benito Mussolini. After claiming victory in the general election, Giorgia Meloni addressed the media and her supporters and said that she dedicated her victory to all those who are not with her but believed that they would win.

For those who are unversed with the leader of the Brothers of Italy, let me introduce her to you. Giorgia Meloni joined the youth wing of the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement party at the age of 15. She then full-fledged entered the political scene in 2006 and co-founded the party in 2012. The agenda of the party is deeply rooted in Euroskepticism and anti-immigration policies.

Giorgia Meloni who has spent most of her political career as a -parliament member and party official, is also the chairman of the European Conservatives and Reformists party since 2020. She is from Rome and has a daughter with her partner Andrea Giambruno – the two have never married. She is deeply conservative, openly anti-LGBT, and has even threatened to place same-sex unions under review – in 2016, Italy legalised same-sex unions. She has gone ahead and called the LGBTQ a “woke ideology” and has promised to oppose policies that allow homosexual couples to adopt or have surrogacy. Not only that, her outlook on abortion – which she calls a “tragedy” – threatens the future of women’s rights.

The reports also suggest that Giorgia Meloni is strongly against illegal migration. She is also opposed to the practice of migrants sailing from places such as North Africa to Italy. She has even suggested a naval blockade to patrol the migrants.

Though Giorgia Meloni is about to make history as Italy’s first female prime minister, her political agendas and her extreme far-right government is not necessarily planning or even interested in advancing or empowering women’s right. In fact, there is a rising concern about women’s rights in the future.
