CM Mamata Banerjee’s Views On West Bengal Rape Case Is A Reflection Of What Society Thinks About Victims
We’ve heard of so many cases of brutal rapes followed by victim shaming and blaming. But West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee just crossed the line after she downplayed the brutal rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in Nadia’s Hanskhali village. A TMC leader’s son has been named as an accused in the case and it looks like the Chief Minister has decided to protect him instead of calling him out. Speaking at the inauguration of the Milan Mela, Mamata Banerjee indulged in victim shaming and blaming that has left us all in shock.
The West Bengal Chief Minister took the liberty to cast aspersions on the dead minor victim’s character. Speaking about the alleged gang rape, Mamata Banerjee questioned where one can get evidence if the girl was actually raped or if she was just pregnant or if there was any other reason like she was beaten up or died due to an illness. And if that wasn’t enough, the West Bengal CM went on to claim that the victim had a ‘love affair’ with the accused and her family and neighbours knew about it. She went on to add that she cannot punish a couple if they love each other. While taking a dig at the Uttar Pradesh government, Mamata Banerjee said that West Bengal is not Uttar Pradesh that couples can be punished in the name of Love Jihad.
As if that wasn’t shameful enough, the Chief Minister of the state went on the shame the media for ‘politicising’ the case to defame West Bengal. Well, woman, we don’t need to shame the state because you’re doing a great job at it already. It is extremely shocking to see a female political leader who is running the state government, shaming a rape victim in a rather obvious attempt to exonerate her political party leader’s son from the heinous crime. It’s shameful to see the lengths she would go to, to save a criminal because he happens to be the son of a TMC leader. And shaming a dead girl who cannot even defend herself, that’s just crossing another line.
Mamata Banerjee is now facing severe backlash over her remarks about the rape case. Several other political leaders have gone on and criticised the West Bengal Chief Minister for her shocking statement. Taking to Twitter, BJP’s Amit Malviya condemned the CM’s actions and called her out for trivializing the brutal rape and murder of the minor girl.

Another BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari also criticised Mamata Banerjee and said that she needs to clean her mouth with bleaching powder and phenyl. “Such a terrible and petty remark cannot be expected from the mouth of the Chief Minister. It is absolutely beyond condemnation,” said the BJP leader as quoted by India Today. Well, we agree with him. The Chief Minister surely needs to rethink her statements. It’s heartbreaking to see a leader of our country, a woman at that, shaming a deceased rape victim.
For the unversed, a 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped when she went to the birthday party of a local TMC leader’s son on April 5. The victim died on Sunday and her family has accused the TMC leader’s son and alleged that the body was cremated without an autopsy due to the political pressure from TMC.
