3 Uttar Pradesh Cops Suspended For Providing Rape Accused Access To A Phone. Why Not Treat Him To Lunch Date As Well, Huh?

The duties and responsibilities of police are to ensure that they not only ensure that all the laws and regulations are followed properly but also to safeguard the general people – especially women and children. But what happens when they are the ones not doing their duties properly? It gets a bit scary to know that the police become cordial or lenient towards those who are accused of heinous crimes like rape. Where am I coming from? Well, just recently three police cops were suspended for providing a mobile phone to a rape accused in lockup while he was being taken to the fast track court.

Yes, on October 21, three police personnel in Uttar Pradesh – head constables Firoz Mehndi and Rishi Kumar, and constable Sarfaraz Ali Khan – were suspended for giving a mobile phone to Vishu Tomar who is accused of rape. The incident took place while Tomar was being taken to the fast track court.

As per reports, officials overlooking this incident said that Vishu Tomar used the phone given to him by the three police cops to chat with his friend through video call. And a video of this surfaced on social media last week which sparked an investigation.

Superintendent of Police (rural) Iraj Raja, who was a part of the investigation said that these three policemen were suspended on Tuesday evening for giving a mobile phone to the rape accused. The suspension was issued because the incident showed that they did not do their duty properly. He also added that they tarnished the image of the police department.

Honestly speaking, this might seem like a small mistake but it is so not done. It somewhere gives the impression that the police are not taking crimes like rape seriously – and somewhere I do know that this is not true. The rights of the accused are taken away for a reason and ensuring that it is followed through is the duty of the police.
