Unmarried Woman Moves To Supreme Court After Delhi HC Denies Abortion

There are many serious issues in this world but controlling women’s bodies is always the centre of attention because treating women like objects is everyone’s favourite pastime but never mind. Recently, an unmarried pregnant woman moved to the Supreme Court challenging the order of Delhi High Court order that denied permission to terminate her 23-week pregnancy.

Last week, the Delhi High Court which refused to permit abortion for the girl did seek a response as to why unmarried women were excluded from being allowed to undergo abortion up to 24 weeks. It said that this is discrimination against unmarried women. After that, the 25-year-old pregnant woman moved to Supreme Court in order to seek help. The woman’s counsel told the bench, which is headed by Chief Justice of India – NV Ramana, that her case should be taken on priority as every day is crucial for her as she is going to complete 24 weeks soon. The lawyers told the bench to list the case for hearing by arguing that it is mental cruelty on the woman as every day is a difficult day for her.

According to the reports, the 25-year-old woman mentioned to the court that her partner, with whom she was in a consensual relationship., refused to marry her after she got pregnant. She also said that she is not mentally prepared to be a mother and giving birth to a child out of wedlock would cause her psychological agony.

During the hearing of the case, the Delhi High Court had said that it would not permit the woman to undergo medical termination of pregnancy at 23 weeks as it virtually amounts to killing the foetus.
