Ukraine Woman Recounts Horrific Incident Of Being Raped By Russian Soldiers After They Killed Her Husband
War is not just a battle between two countries but it’s also a war against humanity with the victim being the common men and women. Amid the gruelling battle between Ukraine and Russia, we’ve witnessed common people being crushed. One of the worst things about war is that both nations witness a rise in war crimes, the major one being rape which is often used as a weapon in the battle between two nations. Reports suggest that there has been a rise in the number of rape cases and just recently, a woman from Ukraine opened up and shared her horrifying experience of being raped by Russian soldiers. This case is the first case out of the multiple reports of sexual violence and rape amid the Russia-Ukraine war to the investigated by Ukraine’s prosecutor general.
Maintaining her anonymity and using a pseudonym, Natalya shared her story of being repeatedly assaulted by Russian soldiers after they killed her husband. Speaking to The Times, Natalya shared that two Russian soldiers, who had earlier killed her family’s dog while walking by her home near Shevchenkove on the outskirts of Kyiv returned to kill her husband. She was inside when she heard a single show and then the sound of the soldiers entering her home. She cried out for her husband and looked out only to find him lying dead after which one of the Russian soldiers told her that they shot her husband as ‘he’s a Nazi’. Recalling the horrifying incident, the woman told the news portal that she was repeatedly raped by the soldiers while her 4-year-old son was hiding in the boiler room crying.
She revealed that she was threatened and asked to take off her clothes after which the soldiers took turns raping her. Natalya shared that they did not care that her son was crying in the boiler room and asked her to shut him up and come back. “All the time they held the gun by my head and taunted me, saying ‘how do you think she sucks it? Shall we kill her or keep her alive?'” said the woman while recounting the horrific incident.
Since the incident, Natalya and her son have left their home and her husband’s body behind and fled. She shared that her son still does not know about his father’s death while adding that they cannot bury him or get to the village as it’s still occupied. She isn’t sure if she will ever return to her home or how she will live with everything that has happened but she did say that she will never be able to sell the house as her husband built it for them.

It’s heartbreaking to come across reports of such horrifying crimes amid the war. War doesn’t just tear apart families but it also kills humanity and leads to war crimes like rape, gang rape and sexual violence. While war may come to an end eventually but these horrifying crimes always stay and leave behind a scar on the hearts, souls and minds of the victims.
