In A First, UK Elects Dalit Female Mayor In London Council, Mohinder K Midha
Women have been oppressed for a long long time now and while we always talk about problems that women in metropolitan cities face, we never address some bigger issues faced by women across the country. Apart from the usual sexism and misogyny, most women also have to deal with casteism. As much as we’d like to believe that the cast system has been eradicated, the sad fact is that it isn’t. At least not in rural areas but now a female from a lower cast has been making headlines for all the good reasons and we’re hoping this will change things for women, especially of those from a lower cast. An Indian-origin politician belonging to the Dalit community, Councillor Mohinder K Midha from UK’s Opposition Labour Party has been elected as the Mayor of Ealing Council in West London. This makes her the first female mayor of a local council in London belonging to the Dalit community.

Councillor Mohinder K Midha was elected as the Mayor of Ealing Council of West London at a council meeting held on Tuesday. She has been elected for the next year’s term of 2022-23. The councillor had been serving as the Deputy Mayor for the council until recently. Earlier, she has been re-elected as a Labour councillor for the Dormers Wells ward in the Ealing Council during the local elections held on May 5. In an official statement about the Midha’s election as the mayor of Ealing Council, the Labour Party said that they are proud of her.
Apart from this, the British Dalit community has also been celebrating Councillor Mohinder K Midha’s win. In a conversation with a news agency as quoted by Business Standard, the head of the Federation of Ambedkarite and Buddhist Organisation (FABO) in the UK, Santosh Dass said that it is a proud moment for them as Midha has become the first-ever Dalit woman to become mayor in the UK. The Dalit group represents the Dalit rights in the United Kingdom.
