This Woman Is Shaving Her Legs With Sandpaper. Wait, What?

Unlike most people my age, I am not the most avid social media user. But this pandemic has taught me just how essential platforms like Instagram and TikTok are to keep yourself entertained. I spend hours every day just mindlessly scrolling through reels, memes and DIY hacks. I am beginning to see the charm. But here is something I learned the hard way, not all hacks and DIY tutorials are reliable or even make sense. Like this video of a woman using sandpaper to shave her legs. Even though it’s creating quite the buzz and going viral on social media, I would most definitely recommend sticking to wax strips and razors.

A TikToker who goes by the handle @jules49of shared a video that featured her using sandpaper to shave her legs. She said she saw another woman using this unconventional method and thought she would give it a try. Jules swore by this method and said that rubbing sandpaper on her legs not only got rid of the hair but also left her skin feeling soft. Forgive my scepticism but something about this is super fishy. There is no way the course texture of sandpaper can make your skin softer. There is no dearth of nonsensical hacks on social media.

In the video, Jules said, “This is my first TikTok on here, I’ve been stalking you people for a little bit. I was watching one of these girls, she’s an ‘accountant’, I was learning about the business, anyway, watching this girl, she’s an accountant and she’s talking about shaving her legs with sandpaper. She used 600 grit sandpaper on her legs.” Further adding, “She said, in a circle this way 10 times, in a circle the other way 10 times. I did it. My god, my skin is so soft, it’s awesome. And it works. I have been using a frickin’ razor all this time. Just some 600 grit sandpaper. Thank you accountants of TikTok.”

I know that this lockdown has left us completely frustrated when it comes to body hair. Since no salons are open, a lot of us are moving to DIY options. But no matter what you do, please don’t take sandpaper to your leg. It’s such a bizarre hack. You don’t need to be a dermatologist to know that its course texture can’t be good for the skin and you could seriously injure yourself. These kinds of videos should come with a disclaimer.
