This Woman Got Engaged To An Inmate In A USA Prison. She’s Never Even Met Him

They say that you find love in the most hopeless places. And even though it sounds like a Tumblr quote, sometimes you meet the right person when you’re least expecting it. For instance, I know of someone who met her now husband in an Uber pool. What are the chances of that happening? Although, as wholesome as these meet-cute stories are, there is a line to be drawn. I have heard of some unbelievable stories that are honestly a little frightening. But none of those anecdotes even hold a candle to this insane story about a woman getting engaged to a prison inmate serving 20 years. We don’t judge but what happened to all the non-incarcerated men around her?

Out of sheer curiosity Kelly Jacobs, a social worker from Heerlen, Netherlands, got in touch with James Dentel, an inmate living in Oregon, USA, serving a 20-year sentence. Soon, the two developed a romantic relationship. They corresponded over video calls, chats, messages and calls. And if this isn’t baffling enough, recently, James proposed to Kelly over video call and the two have decided to get married in October of this year.

Screenshots of their video chat showing James holding a wedding ring are doing rounds on social media. Obviously, the main problem the couple face is that James is serving 20 years at the Snake River Correctional Institution for assault and unlawful use of a firearm in 2012. He shot four people and won’t be released till 2032. Hence, the couple has no choice but to have a prison wedding.

Talking about the proposal and when they got engaged, Kelly said, “He proposed with a prison-made ring, but then he had someone in the free world order a ring at a jeweller for me. For the wedding, I won’t wear a traditional, fancy dress, because people don’t do that for prison weddings.” Another interesting thing to note is that James and Kelly have never been in the same room together. And reportedly, it’s unlikely that Kelly will be allowed conjugal visits even after the couple gets married.

Kelly and James’ story might make for a good movie. If people enjoy a bizarre prison love story that is.
