Unpopular opinion: Out of town train journeys are so much better than flights. Yes, they take nearly double the time but it’s also double the fun. Minus the disgusting washrooms, of course. Climbing on berths, eating junk food, playing cards with complete strangers, out of town trains just make the journey more adventurous. Sometimes a little too adventurous. I say this after hearing about a woman who delivered a baby on a train with the help of female passengers. This story brought a smile to my face.

On Tuesday, while Puja Sharma was travelling from Gujarat’s Bharuch to Hisar in Haryana she started experiencing labour pains. She was travelling with her brother who asked various female passengers to help. They assisted her in giving birth and ensured that both the mother and baby were safe. Once Puja had delivered the baby with the help of her co-passengers, she and her newborn son were given immediate medical attention by the railway authorities.

According to Anil Raina, the Senior Commercial Divisional Manager of North Western Railway, Puja went into labour at around 7:45 am. The authorities onboard the train informed the Bikaner control room and asked for medical help. The train was about to reach Ratnagarh station at the time. However, before they reached the railway station, Puja had already delivered the baby with the help of her female co-passengers. A medical team was already waiting for Puja and her baby at the Ratangarh station. They provided her with the necessary injections and medications.

A similar incident happened just a few weeks ago. A woman who went into labour on a train gave birth to a healthy baby with the help of the Meri Saheli Team. These kinds of stories are incredibly wholesome. It’s so lovely to see women coming together to help another woman bring new life into this world.
